FOREWORD
by Barbara Ryan, Publishing Director,
Truck and Track
This full-on Exhibition number of
Truck and Track
looks
back on two highly successful annual NEC Shows – the
CV Show and Multimodal, highlights stands at Tip-Ex,
Harrogate, and previews two more big events, eagerly
anticipated in September – TCS&D in Coventry’s Ricoh
Arena (Pages 68-69) and RWM at the NEC (Page 24).
We focus on technological developments and
operational cost- and fuel-saving ideas galore at the Shows, as well as on
major company and infrastructure investments around the country. The
latter reflect confidence in the future growth of UK manufacturing as the
pound sterling falls in value, perhaps to its more natural level, making
Britain’s own products and services more attractive both to us and to our
customers globally.
Accordingly we describe mega projects such as Verdion iPort Doncaster
(Page 4) and how the UK’s largest port operator ABP is more than doubling
the capacity of its Hull and Immingham container terminals (Page 66).
Accentuating the positive, it is always nice to be recognised in the wider
world of business, and Quartix’s accolade from the London Stock Exchange
for the third year in succession (Page 19) gives a boost to our industry as
well as to Britain!
Meanwhile John Smith, Managing Director of GB Railfreight, has signed a
three-year contract extension with MSC for containers out of Felixstowe
(Page 63). As a larger-than-life, high-energy character, John was an
eminently worthy recipient of the “Multimodal Personality of the Year”
award, presented this time by the legendary 1980s England cricket captain
and left-handed bat David Gower, OBE, alongside Show Director Bob Jervis
(Page 79).
Then we report on how BP is shifting towards gas from a legacy focus on oil
(Page 56) – although its Russian partner Rosneft could do with a bit of help
from President Putin in relaxing Gazprom’s pipeline gas export monopoly!
Among the new names which we recommend to you in this Issue no.32
are those of mobile wireless provider YRoam launching in the UK (Page
19), TPMS specialist TyrePal (Page 36) and CV technologies innovator and
integrator Kinishi (Pages 42-43), not to mention Tachodisc Vision software
from the FTA (Pages 46-47).
So much news for you to digest in a truly mouth-watering Issue! But
don’t forget to send us your own feedback and company, technology and
contracts stories. We are eager to hear from you, because
Truck and Track
has been both the voice and the flagbearer of your haulage and logistics
industry continuously since 2009.
With best regards from the
Truck and Track
team
