KNOWLEDGE & TRAINING

Launched in January 2017, the not-for-profit, industry-led,

National Register of LGV Instructors (NRI) is the only register

endorsed by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency)

and is operated by the RTITB. Also supported by the Freight

Transport Association and Road Haulage Association, the

NRI aims to promote higher standards of LGV instruction and

increase the number of registered instructors, in turn helping

to improve the LGV training pass rate.

What is the NRI?

The NRI provides a single, national register for the road transport

industry, following the announcement of the closure of the DVSA’s

existing register on 31st December 2016, and it went live on 1st

January 2017.

The DVSA and RTITB, the preferred workplace transport training

regulatory body, have worked closely with the training industry

and trade associations, including the RHA and the FTA, to ensure

that the benefits of the registers continue, but the responsibility is

passed to the industry itself.

RichardBrewer,Manager of theNational Register of LGV Instructors,

explains: “The new NRI is run on a not-for-profit basis for the road

transport industry, by the industry, which is best placed to develop

a relevant and robust register for the future.

“By working together, the register will improve the standards of LGV

driver training, while providing an opportunity to further expand

the register and professionalise the LGV training industry as a

whole.”

How does the NRI help the LGV sector?

The objectives of the NRI include maintaining standards for the

required skills and knowledge of LGV instructors, improving the

standard of LGV instruction available and increasing the overall

number of registered instructors.

It is also a goal of the new register to contribute to an improvement

in the national pass rate of LGV vocational tests. Test pass rates for

candidates trained by those instructors registered on the NRI will

be published in the future.

Mark Winn, the DVSA’s Head of Vocational Policy, comments: “DVSA

will be part of the governance committee overseeing the delivery

and development of the register and associated examination. It will

continue to set standards for driver training through its role on the

committee, and by maintaining the national standard for driving

lorries.”

Both the RTITB and DVSA are encouraging members of the expired

voluntary registers to join the new register.

What are the benefits to employers?

By qualifying instructors with the NRI, employers will be able to

prove their instructors have the necessary skills and knowledge

to deliver highly effective license acquisition training, Driver CPC

training and post-incident / assessment remedial training, ensuring

that their business has independent evidence of their commitment

to high-quality, structured LGV driver training.

In addition, employers can demonstrate that they are investing

in their instructors by providing them with a highly regarded

professional qualification and can help their instructors, by

allowing them to have access to free technical advice and exclusive

professional development opportunities.

How are instructors registered?

Experienced instructors can join the scheme directly by taking

a four-part examination. That includes a theory test, practical

driving ability assessment, in-cab training and classroom training.

Alternatively, employers may wish instructors to go through a

training course before they take the examination to register.

Employers should ensure their chosen training provider offers good

pass rates and has high standards and quality processes.

Upon successfully completing the examination, employers

can enrol their instructors on the NRI with a registration form.

Registration lasts for five years and costs £62.50 plus VAT.
