The Haulage & Logistics Buyers Magazine
FOREWORD
by Barbara Ryan, Publishing
Director, Truck and Track
I’m delighted to be able to tell
you that 2019 will mark the 10th
Anniversary of Truck and Track
magazine. Whilst it’s been an
interesting and enjoyable journey
for me andmy small team, it hasn’t
been without its challenges.
I’ve travelled fairly extensively throughout the UK and
Europe to meet leading companies operating within the
transport and logistics industry and, in doing so, have
met many knowledgeable and hard working individuals. I
hope that I’mnot being over sentimental when I say that I
now count some of these people as firm friends.
During the past ten years, I’ve been lucky enough to visit
manufacturing sites, warehouses, distribution centres,
quarries, factories and many other locations. As different
as they may be, they would all be unable to function
without the skill and dedication of the people who drive
the trucks, vans and other vehicles upon which we all rely.
In fact, I’d go as far as to say that they’re not just driving
their vehicles, they’re actually driving the UK economy.
And while I’m on the subject of drivers, Gloucester-based
WMB Logistics recently carried out research as part of an
ongoing study into Britons’ attitudes towards road safety.
The survey established, unsurprisingly, that the safest
drivers on UK roads are lorry drivers. Not for the first time,
I’m more than happy to sing the praises of the men and
women who continually go the extra mile – literally – to
support every facet of our daily lives.
Speaking as someone who’s been immersed in the
haulage and logistics industry for many years, I’m almost
embarrassed to confess that I’ve never actually driven a
lorry so I’m particularly pleased to shine the spotlight on
our ‘Queens of the Road”. As our centre spread fromCulina
Group emphasises, logistics is an area where equality is
improving rapidly, especially in the crucial role of HGV
Driver. With a nationwide driver shortage, there’s never
been a better time for women to take the wheel and
choose a career on the open road.
As usual, this issue contains a mix of industry news,
new product information, case studies and advice. We
take a look at a number of sectors including lubricants,
dangerous goods, battery management, loading bays,
ports, rail and fuel management. Also, looking ahead to
2019, we have included information about the Talent in
Logistics Conference which takes place on 27th June at
the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
In closing, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all
our readers and advertisers heartfelt thanks for your
continuing support. I wish you, and those close to you,
a very happy Christmas plus a healthy and prosperous
2019.
