DANGEROUS GOODS

A very useful resource to help logistics operators and their drivers is

the Security Training DVD from The Department for Transport [with

training guidance notes]. This can be obtained from your DGSA or

direct from DfT. Ensure that the training is reviewed periodically

and documented.

More information regarding transport security and storage

of Dangerous Goods, including HCDGs, can be obtained from

It’s probably nothing but… if you see or hear anything that could

be terrorist-related trust your instincts and call the Confidential

If you think you have seen someone acting suspiciously, or if you see

a vehicle, unattended package or bagwhichmight be an immediate

threat, move away and call 999.

Closing anecdote indicating that it is better to be safe,

than sorry

Way before the terrorist threat became

“ubiquitous”, in the need for vigilance; I

recall an interesting situation at Interoute

Transport’s Eaglescliffe Depot [now owned

by GCA North]. I was the Operations

Director for the Chemical Division, when

our traffic desk in Teesside received a call

from one of our tanker drivers on the A19

carrying 20 tonnes of Ethylene Oxide. The

driver reported concerns that a car had

been driving very close to his rear, and

had been tailing him for well over an hour.

We called the Cleveland Police, who sent

a patrol car immediately to the location

of our tanker and the rogue car tailing it.

When the tanker and car where pulled

into a layby by law-enforcement officers, it

transpired that the rogue car contained two

elderly ladies [from the Women’s Institute]

who had became lost heading back to their

home in Eaglescliffe; so when they spotted

our tanker with the rear livery proudly

stating ‘Interoute Transport Eaglescliffe’

with the 01642 telephone number, they

thought their prayers were answered and

proceeded to follow our tanker home. This

time the incident caused amusement in the traffic office, and the

driver was commended on remaining vigilant while entrusted with

a bulk load of an extremely hazardous product, Ethylene Oxide. It

also re-iterated that vigilance is essential, at all times.

All people and organisations involved in the field of Dangerous

Goods - be it production, storage, transport, usage, consignors,

consignees, emergency responders - all have a duty of care, as well

as legally enforceable obligations.

The days of ‘black-wrapping’ a hazardous pallet are over, as the

ramifications of doing so are severe, both legally as well as ethically,

and onerous.
