Many operators in the tipping, bulk haulage, tanker and bulk
liquid transport industries converged on the co-located,
three-day Tip-Ex and Tank-Ex trade shows at the Harrogate
Convention Centre in early June. With over 100 OEMs and
suppliers on show, many of whom only exhibit at Tip-Ex and
Tank-Ex, these have become the must-attend events for
haulage companies in the dry bulk and liquid tanker sectors.
DAF Trucks displayed a ‘Construction’ CF400 FAD eight-wheel
tipper-grab loaned by LC Vehicle Hire – the major rental and
contract-hire provider specialising in tipper and tipper-grab
applications. The Thompsons-bodied 8x4 was specially painted
with a black cab and red chassis in recognition of the company’s
60th anniversary.
The new eight-wheel tipper-grab was one of 50 new DAF eight-
wheelers delivered into the Leeds-based operator in 2017 alone
– with the built-in-Britain marque now making up approximately
50% of the 2,000-plus vehicle fleet.
“We are passionate supporters of the DAF brand,” declared LC
Vehicle HireManaging Director, ChrisMiller. “In fact, if it’s not a DAF,
the truck in question will almost always come back with problems
somewhere down the line. DAF makes up around half of the fleet,
and we’d really like it to be more.
“The DAF tipper product is of the highest quality, but our preference
for DAF goes much further than that. It’s the dealer support from
Evans Halshaw and all the DAF individuals behind the scenes.
We just don’t receive the same level of cooperation from other
manufacturers, and it makes all the difference.”
DAF Trucks’ Construction CF model is designed predominantly
for off-road muckaway work. It is equipped with straight-beam
front axles to provide high ground clearance and approach angle,
thus maximising mobility on uneven terrain. The latest front
suspension design and optional aluminium air tanks facilitate a
payload improvement of over 100kg. Single reduction rear axles are
mounted on a high articulation, steel-sprung rear bogie.
The Tip-Ex show exhibit was complete with a Thompsons
Loadmaster body, a Palfinger Epsilon M125L crane and clamshell
bucket. Ancillaries included wacker carrier, tool storage, full side-
and rear-underrun bars, towbar and reversing camera.

Renault Trucks showcased three trucks from its robust
construction range at Tip-Ex, including a Range T lightweight
6x2 tractor unit withmini mid-lift.
The first two vehicles were 32t 8x4 tippers – a Tarmac-spec 13-litre
C520 and an 11-litre C430 Tridem with steering axle offering
optimum manoeuvrability. Both trucks come equipped with PPG
insulated aluminium aggregate bodies, configured to suit a wide
cross-section of multi-axle tipper operations.
For operators looking for the manoeuvrability of a six-wheeler with
the load capacity of an eight-wheeler, the Range C tridem with
factory-fitted extra axle adaption provides an effective solution. As
well as improved site access, the manoeuvrability advantage of the
tridem’s rear-lifting axle keeps the truck closer to the kerb than a
traditional 8x4 when turning left, which can help reduce the high-
risk gap for cyclists.
The third vehicle on the Renault Trucks stand, as pictured here, was
a lightweight T460 44t 11-litre 6x2 tractor unit with mini mid-lift
(MML), suitable for aggregate or liquid applications and featuring
a factory-fitted PTO and tipping equipment. The Range T MML
derivative, being up to half-a-tonne lighter than the standard 6x2
mid-lift, offers significant payload advantages for operators.
All Renault trucks are available with Euro-VI Step C-compliant
engines, which can deliver reduced fuel costs of up to 2% whilst
increasing payloads by up to 114kg.
