PORTS
Hutchison Ports Thailand, the leading port operator in
Thailand, welcomed the ONE COLUMBA container vessel of
Ocean Network Express, with a total gross tonnage of 145,647
tons, at its Terminal D at Laem Chabang Port. This is the first
time a container vessel of this size has berthed in Thailand.
The ONE COLUMBA has a capacity of 14,053 TEUs (twenty-foot
equivalent unit of container), with total length of 364 meters,
total breadth of 51 meters and gross tonnage of 145,647 tons.
On this occasion, Hutchison Ports Thailand deployed new remote-
controlled quay cranes to handle 2,269 containers loaded to the
vessel in a fast, accurate and safe manner.
Terminal D is the first terminal in Thailand to handle the 14,000
TEU class of ocean going container vessels. On full completion, the
new Terminal D will have a total quay length of 1,700 meters, with
17 super post panamax quay cranes and 43 electric rubber tyred
gantry cranes (yard cranes) all using remote control technology.
It will be one of the world’s first container terminals where all
the quay and yard cranes will be operating using remote control.
Terminal D will greatly facilitate the growth of container volumes
at LaemChabang Port, adding a further 3.5million TEUs of capacity
on full completion.
The new Terminal D will be capable of handling some of the largest
ocean going vessels currently in operation, offering customers
more choice and flexibility, as well as improved efficiency and
productivity. Terminal D will be an integral part of Thailand’s
Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) under Thailand 4.0’s objective
to modernize the economy through improved infrastructure and
innovation.
