TACHOGRAPH ANALYSIS
Ready for installation –
Continental receives type approval
for the intelligent tachograph
■■
Planning security for the commercial vehicle world –
completion of the approval process 6 months before the
new smart tachograph regulation comes into force
■■
Manufacturers are already equipping their first newvehicles
with the VDO DTCO 4.0 and the new KITAS 4.0 speed sensor
Leading technology company Continental is the first supplier in
the market to receive type approval for its intelligent VDO DTCO
4.0 smart tachograph and KITAS 4.0 speed sensor. Commercial
vehicle manufacturers have already started to install the DTCO 4.0,
so the first models with the new technology will soon be delivered
to dealers and fleet operators. “We implemented the complex
industrialization process with great efficiency, with the production
of the existing Digital Tachograph DTCO 3.0 running in parallel,”
says a company spokesperson. “We are very proud that, with our
concerted effort, we succeeded in completing the very demanding
approval procedures before the end of 2018. Now our customers
have enough time to equip their vehicles.” Even vehicles which are
delivered to bodymanufacturers before their initial registration can
now be factory fitted with the new technology specified by the law.
According to the new tachographs regulation (EU) 165/2014, all
newly registered trucks must have an intelligent digital tachograph
on board from June 15, 2019 – and this includes the new KITAS 4.0
sensor.
Amultitude of options for efficient fleet
management
Transport companies that expand or retrofit their fleets with the
VDO DTCO 4.0 will benefit in several ways. Not only does the link
to a satellite positioning system and the wireless transmission of
data during road checks make life easier for them, the intelligent
tachograph also becomes a comprehensive, authenticated data
source for all telematics processes thanks to its trendsetting
security technology.
In the future, many more applications are also conceivable if data
from the tachograph is passed on to other systems, such as apps
that guide drivers to the nearest cheap petrol station. The company
is confident that many of the services to be programmed in the
coming years will make the lives of drivers and fleet managers
easier andwill use the secure and authenticated data from the VDO
DTCO 4.0.
Education the Smart way
forward with Continental
■■
From smart tachograph training for Workshop Technicians
and Fleet Managers, Continental have the solution to make
the new Smart Tachograph changes as easy as possible.
Changes in the transport world are imminent and the 15th June
2019 and smart tachograph technology is approaching fast….
“Here at Continental, we are very aware of the considerable
changes that are taking place within the transport world in 2019
and how difficult it can sometimes be to implement changes in
businesses, so with this inmind we decided to offer seminars at the
Commercial Vehicle Show this year to help to educate transport
operators and drivers.
The session will be a one hour briefing and will include the latest
information on changes on legislation and how it could affect you.
They are designed for information purposes and not to take the
place of any other legal training that is required.
The sessions will also include information about changes within
the tyre industry and futuristic transport innovations that major
on safety and security.” Commented Jackie Dougall, Marketing
Manager at Continental Automotive.
To register for one of the sessions please visit

Continental will also be running a new podcast series that will
be launched in mid-February. Again the idea of the concept is to
keep people update with the changes. The first series will include
5 episodes and will cover topics such as legislation, training
requirements, datamanagement tools andmore, to listen in please
