CONTRACTS & ORDERS – HIGHLIGHTS

Transdek UK has supplied a customised package of double-

deck trailers and loading systems for Nisa Retail that will save

over £400,000 a year and slash CO2 emissions by more than

730,000 kg per annum, on a contract that is operated by DHL

Supply Chain. Nisa is a member-owned organisation, serving

independent food retailers across the UK and Ireland. The

group represents over 1,300 registered shareholders operating

more than 3,000 stores.

Nisa’s network despatches over 2.7 million cases per week across

the UK, Republic of Ireland, Scottish Islands, Isle of Man, Isle of

Wight and Channel Islands. Nisa operates one large ambient

picking warehouse in Scunthorpe, along with three temperature-

controlled picking depots at Livingston, Stoke and Harlow. These

sites are supported by seven outbase locations.

From its Scunthorpe ambient distribution centre, Nisa has started

operating ten of Transdek’s Wedge double-deck trailers, which

have enabled the group to remove 1,300 trunks from its transport

network and cut nearly 820,000 km from

vehicle routes annually. This equates to

saving approximately 273,000 litres of

diesel a year.

Lee Vickers –Head of Logistics at Nisa Retail

explained to

Truck and Track

: “We distribute

substantial ambient volumes into the

South of the country from Scunthorpe, and

the introduction of Transdek trailers has

allowed us to reduce the primary transport

profile by circa 25 trunks per week by using

the additional floor space and weight

capacity more effectively.”

In addition to the Wedge trailers, Transdek

has installed four of its five-pallet, hydraulic double-deck lifts at

Nisa distribution centres.

The new surface-mounted lifts feature a bi-fold bridge plate

designed to enable safer and easier access to the rear doors of

trailers after docking, and replaced old dock leveller bays, which

weredecommissionedandconverted toacceptfixeddeckdeliveries.

Following on from the success of the new lifts, Transdek also

installed a 12.5t double-deck modular loadhouse unit at Nisa’s

Scunthorpewarehouse to specifically support high-volume loading

on major trunking runs along with additional Wedge trailers.

As part of a strategy to embrace cutting-edge supply chain

improvements to underpin the expansion of its independent retail

network, Nisa de-fleeted ten powered double-deck vehicles to

accommodate Transdek’s fixed double-deck solution.

Onsite hydraulic hose repairers Hydraquip like the Mercedes-

Benz Sprinter so much that they has commissioned no fewer

than 100 over the last three years. The company was founded

in Crawley, West Sussex, and now has a network of 25 depots

stretching fromAberdeen to Exeter. It runs 160 vehicles, 105 of

themMercedes-Benz Sprinters kittedout asmobileworkshops.

All but five have been delivered since 2014, with the latest taking to

the road in the last few weeks and a further 20 scheduled to enter

service before the end of the year.

The medium-length vans are assigned to service engineers

who provide a 24-hour, national call-out service, undertaking

onsite repairs to hydraulic hoses, typically on civil engineering,

construction and quarrying plant, railway rolling stock and FLTs.

A combination of Sprinter 313 CDIs and, over the last three years,

Euro VI-engined 314 CDIs have been supplied by Sussex and Surrey

dealers Rossetts Commercials. Rossetts get the vans fitted with

storage systems for spare parts, tools and equipment by van racking

specialist Bott from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leics.

Founded by Duncan MacBain in 1989, Hydraquip started out with

a staff of three, but now employs more than 300 people, who work

from 25 locations nationwide. This progressive company is still

actively expanding – its target is to have 200 service vans on the

road by 2020.

Hydraquiphas developedabespokeapp, believed tobe thefirst in its

industry, which its engineers use to provide detailed updates about

any callout to the customer in real time via their smartphones.
