SAFETY & SECURITY

Vulnerability is plain to see from the cab of an HGV when you’re

surrounded by cyclists, cars, traffic lights and designated road

crossings which may be located close to schools and shops.

However, even if you’re in no particular hurry, there will be

plenty of drivers around you who will be. There will also be

plenty of people, even children, on foot who may think they

have enough time to run across the pelican crossing even

though the ‘greenman’ has stopped flashing.

This scenario will always be one that requires alertness and total

concentration. But, just to make things worse, let’s add torrential

rain, or freezing fog or, even, dazzling sunshine to the mix and now

we have a journey that’s just got much more dangerous. Oh, and

one more thing – why don’t we throw in a driver who’s been on the

road for eight hours? He’s looking forward to arriving home and,

maybe, his thoughts are turning to his dinner, or a soak in the bath.

So, let’s imagine that he’s not exhausted but, understandably, he’s

a little weary and maybe not quite as sharp as he was when he left

home much earlier in the day.

So, the aforementioned vulnerability is still obvious but our driver

is really pleased that he’s not having to rely solely on what he

can see from his driving position. He’s an experienced driver with

many thousands of miles on his personal ‘clock’ and he works for a

company who value his unique contribution to the success of the

business. That’s why he appreciates the company’s investment in a

range of safety equipment from Vision UK Limited.

His vehicle is fitted with an array of products that have achieved

accreditation from the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS)

and Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS).

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a

voluntary accreditation scheme that promotes best

practice for commercial vehicle operators.Withover

4,900 members, FORS is gaining recognition as the

transport industry’s go-to accreditation scheme.

FORS encompasses all aspects of safety, efficiency,

and environmental protection by encouraging

and training fleet operators to measure, monitor and improve

performance. FORS provides accreditation pathways for operators

of any type, and for those organisations that award contracts and

specify transport requirements.

FORS Bronze, Silver and Gold membership provides progressive

accreditation enabling operators to achieve exemplary levels of

best practice.

The CLOCS scheme provides the Construction

Logistics Industry with the best practice for

managing work related road risk (WRRR) and

ensuring a road safety culture is embedded

across the industry.  This scheme helps to protect

pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and other

vulnerable road users who share the roads with

construction vehicles.

The FORS silver requirements are now aligned to the requirements

of the Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS)

Standard and TfL’s Work Related Road Risk (WRRR) requirements.

To help Fleet Operators meet the safety requirements of the

FORS and CLOCS Scheme, Vision UK offers system packages

designed to meet the specific requirements of the different levels

of the scheme.
