www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2026 Truck and Track 35 DANGEROUS GOODS We all welcome the summer, with elevated temperatures and direct sunshine, however planning for this season is essential for the multimodal logistics operator involved with Dangerous Goods. My experience has indicated that approximately half of all Dangerous Goods carried on UK Roads are of a flammable nature; much of which has been produced outside of Great Britain. These materials arrive into the UK via Multimodal logistics (sea-rail-road) under the ADR and IMDG regulations. The majority of these flammable materials are in a liquid state Class 3 (Flammable Liquid). However we must also make mention of Classes 2 (Compressed and Refrigerated Gases), 4 (Reactive, Dangerous when Wet, Flammable Solids) and 5 (Oxidising Agents and Organic Peroxides) which are Regulated Dangerous Goods (which may also have flammability risk). What is the definition of a Flammable Liquid? A flammable liquid is a volatile fluid that has a flash point at ambient (or at a lower) temperature; but one that does not exceed 60 °C (at atmospheric pressure). Class Three liquids encompass Fuels, Solvents, Oils, Surface Coatings Products (including Paints, Varnishes, and Adhesives), Pharmaceuticals, Cleaning Products, Alcohols, Ethers, Lacquers, Polymeric Products, Oxidising Materials etc often (but not exclusively) derived from Petroleum refining and carried in Bulk Tankers, Containers, Bowsers, and as Palletised (and Parcel) Goods.
