www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2026 Truck and Track 3 FOREWORD by Barbara Ryan, Publishing Director, Truck and Track Welcome to the Summer Edition of Truck and Track. In my Foreword section of the Spring Edition, I touched on the challenges for our industry presented by the fuel crisis and its effects. Currently there appears to be adequate supplies but sensibly the government has in place contingency plans for the implementation of fuel rationing if supplies should run low. Let’s hope that a solution is quickly found and things return to normal. The Multimodal 2026 is now in its 19th year and takes place at the NEC Birmingham from 30th June until 2nd July. Truck and Track magazine can be found on stand 8010 where all visitors will receive a warm welcome and we will be showcasing the companies which appear in the magazine. Descartes Customs and Allports Group, who are both regularly featured in Truck and Track magazine, also have their own stands at Multimodal 2026. Truck and Track would like to congratulate the UPN (United Parcel Network) which is celebrating a special anniversary. Founded 25 years ago UPN has grown steadily and now has over 100 members supporting a network with nationwide and European coverage. Amongst their many accolades is the major achievement of being the first pallet network to achieve carbon neutral delivery. Running alongside Multimodal 2026 is the RTX (Road Transport Expo) show located at the NAEC Stoneleigh, not too far from the NEC. The Summer Edition of Truck and Track will be freely available at the show entrance. As usual I hope you enjoy your read of the Summer Edition of Truck and Track and I look forward to meeting you on stand 8010 at Multimodal 2026. Truck and Track Summer 2026 www.truckandtrack.com 4 BUSINESS NEWS In the Spring edition of Truck and Track we featured an article on the VBG “Mechmatic” accessory which cleans and lubricates the coupling automatically. In this edition we will look at another option which VBG has recently added to their range of coupling care products. “Keep it Safe “Kit (Pt No 49-002400) A new accessory from VBG is the “Keep it Safe “kit. Supplied in a handy drawstring bag containing two aerosol cans, plastic wear gauge and instructions. This product is aimed at drivers who have a positive interest in their truck and encourages them to carry out some very basic service and inspection functions that will in the long run keep the coupling safe and functioning correctly. The kit isn’t intended as a replacement for timed workshop servicing and inspections. One of the aerosol cans is filled with VBG “Mech oil” this is the recommended lubricant for all VBG couplings. This lubricant has a special formula and after application leaves behind an oily film on the surfaces it contacts, unlike some aerosol lubricants which can free off seized components but then dry out lose their ability to retain any lubrication properties. It is recommended that the Mech oil is injected periodically through the holes in the couplings metal lid which are covered by the two rubber bungs. Applied in this way the lubricant covers the internal workings of the mechanism and then works its way down over the coupling pin onto the lower jaw bushing. Grease is NOT a substitute and should be avoided at all costs! Grease will not reach and lubricate the internal moving parts within, it simply attracts grit and other road debris turning this into a form of grinding paste causing premature wear of the coupling pin and trailer eye components. The other aerosol can is VBG “electro oil” and as the name suggests is formulated for application to the electric service connections between the truck and trailer. The application of “Electro oil” will help repel water ingress and eliminate corrosion of the contacts. The plastic gauge is a simple coupling pin and trailer eye wear check device. If the gauge slides easily over the ball part of the pin this indicates the coupling pin has reached its wear limit and it is time to fit a new mechanism kit. The mechanism kit is a complete overhaul kit which includes the top portion of the coupling, upper and lower jaw bushings and a pair of wear plates. When the coupling pin has reached its wear limit contact your VBG service provider. They will order and fit the kit of parts to restore the coupling to its “as new” condition. Checking the trailer eye wear ring or bushing is just as easy, using the other end of the wear gauge. If that part of the gauge slides easily through the wear ring or bushing it is worn to the recommended change limit. It should be noted that most of the wear on this component will occur in a North /South direction. In the case of the wear ring this is a shrink fit item. Under no circumstances should it be driven out with a large hammer and drift! Refer to the VBG website for the correct removal and fitting instructions. Inspection, servicing and recording Returning to the inspection and care of the VBG coupling equipment. Many operators have closed their own workshops and replaced them with (R&M) Repair and Maintenance contracts offered by the truck manufacturers and their dealer network. However, in some cases, these contracts do not include ancillary items, such as the coupling equipment! This then begs the question who is taking responsibility for the inspection, servicing and record keeping of this Safety Critical item? It is certain that in the event of a trailer detachment, due to a defective coupling, the Vehicle Operations and Safety Authority (VOSA) will require answers to these questions and will delve into records to find the answer! If the coupling equipment is covered by a R&M contract, make certain that the provider is properly trained and understands the VBG products. The inspection or repair should be recorded. VBG can offer workshop training and support for all its products. In addition, a great deal of helpful information is readily available direct from the VBG website or alternatively a call to the Warrington office will get you the support needed. www.vbg.eu Keeping Your VBG Coupling Healthy Visit us on Stand Y12

Truck and Track Summer 2026 www.truckandtrack.com 8 BUSINESS NEWS Opex Logistics has reinforced its fleet and operational capability with continued investment in Krone trailers, the trailer fleet includes Profi Liner HD flatbeds, FS10 skeletal container carriers, and Profi Liner curtainsiders. The Bristol-based operator has worked with Krone Trailer UK for almost eight years, building a strong supplier relationship as part of its ongoing fleet development, replacement and expansion strategy. Opex Logistics provides specialist transport and freight-handling services across the UK and Europe, supporting sectors including aerospace, engineering and other high-value industries. Its work frequently involves non-standard, time-critical and varied loads, requiring a flexible fleet capable of handling everything from containerised freight to palletised goods and abnormal cargo. While Krone originally supplied Profi Liner curtainsider trailers to Opex, the relationship has evolved in recent years to include a broader mix of equipment. In recent times, Krone has delivered three FS10 skeletal trailers, some Profi Liner HD Flats and more than 30 Profi Liner curtainsiders, enabling Opex to further diversify its fleet and expand the scope of logistics services it can offer customers. The Krone FS10 skeletal trailers provide a versatile solution for container transport, with extendable chassis configurations allowing operators to accommodate a range of container lengths. This flexibility supports efficient handling of different container sizes while maintaining strength and stability for demanding operations. Alongside this, the Profi Liner curtainsiders offer enhanced load security and operational versatility. Equipped with Krone’s Multi Lock side rave system, which features strapping points at 10cm intervals along the trailer length, the Profi Liners allow a multitude of strapping options, enabling a variety of loads to be secured at any point along the trailer bed. Meanwhile, the Krone Profi Liner HD flatbed trailers, originally introduced into the fleet, remain a key part of Opex’s operation. Designed for heavy-duty and general haulage applications, they feature a reinforced chassis construction and high-capacity axle set-up to support operation at UK maximum weights, while allowing flexibility in load configuration. Load restraint on the flatbeds can also accommodate a wide range of cargo types including steel products, palletised goods and irregular loads. Across all trailer types, durability is enhanced through Krone’s cathodic dip coating process, providing long-term corrosion protection and underpinning the manufacturer’s 10-year warranty against corrosion perforation. “We first introduced Krone trailers into the fleet nearly eight years ago,” says Opex Director, Peter Scrivin, “and they have performed consistently over that time. They are reliable, versatile trailers and well suited to the varied and demanding work we undertake. “As our operation has grown, the ability to expand the fleet with different trailer types, from flatbeds to curtainsiders and container carriers, has been important in giving us the flexibility to meet our customers’ needs. We have also had good support from Krone Trailer UK, both at the point of purchase and in service, which is an important factor when making continued investment decisions.” According to Opex Logistics, the latest additions reflect its ongoing focus on fleet flexibility, load security and operational efficiency, enabling the business to provide a broader, more responsive logistics service to its customers across multiple sectors. Truck and Track Summer 2026 www.truckandtrack.com 10 BUSINESS NEWS Many logistics operations are at risk without even knowing it. Operations may seem to be running smoothly: routes are getting completed, goods are getting delivered and service levels are on track. But what happens when a crisis or disruption hits? Just because something appears to be okay today doesn’t mean it will be tomorrow. And with the current geopolitical landscape looking uncertain, rising fuel costs, basic road infrastructure in the UK declining and the constant threat of driver shortages, unexpected issues can quickly derail a logistics business’s bottom line. Andrew Tavener, Head of Marketing at Descartes, believes that an “OK” performance for logistics businesses isn’t a sign of strength; it’s often a sign that problems have yet to be exposed… The Disruptions Set to Stress Test Logistics Operations in 2026 Operations rarely fail under normal conditions. It’s when pressure is applied that weaknesses become visible. However, with fleets operating on tighter margins, typically around 2–3%, according to industry data from the Road Haulage Association, there’s little room for error. With fuel prices expected to continue rising due to the Iran/US conflict, the knock-on effect is higher operating costs for fleets across the UK, especially those running large last-mile delivery networks where fuel remains one of the biggest expenses. These fluctuating prices are likely to keep the fuel market unpredictable over the coming months. The UK’s road network is also under increasing strain. There are now thought to be more than one million potholes across the country. This problem shows little sign of easing as demonstrated by the Asphalt Industry Alliance’s latest ALARM Survey, which estimates the UK’s road maintenance backlog has reached a record £18.62 billion, signaling that infrastructure will only continue to deteriorate. Therefore, businesses should expect increasing wear and tear on vehicles and rising maintenance costs. On top of all this, the recent warning from Insite about a looming HGV driver shortage, following the loss of driver training funding, highlights an urgent need for logistics operators to reduce pressure on existing drivers or expect to lose them altogether. It is when these kinds of pressures eventually affect a logistics business that is operating ‘OK’ that the cracks show. These challenges don’t always cause immediate failure. Instead, they gradually erode profitability. Operators need to ensure they are getting ahead of the curve and ensuring their hidden inefficiencies don’t compound quickly, impacting both cost and service. Ever-Rising Customer Expectations As established previously, the landscape in logistics is never truly stable. This is also the case for customer expectations. Descartes’ latest Ecommerce and Home Delivery Consumer Sentiment Study found that 66% of consumers experienced delivery issues, rising to 79% among under-35s, highlighting a clear gap between what businesses deliver and what customers expect. At the same time, satisfaction remains low, with only 11% of under-35s saying they are consistently satisfied with delivery experiences. These problems are exacerbated when demand increases over seasonal peaks. The combination of high customer expectations and the lack of tolerance for errors means that even the smallest issue in the logistics pipeline will lead to a negative customer review and ruin any long-term loyalty. Moving from Reactive Operations to Active Planning While conditions are undoubtedly challenging for logistics operators, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The operators leading the way have already taken a new approach to planning. These businesses are looking beyond their current fleet performance and are stress testing their businesses consistently. This type of scenario-based planning exposes weaknesses early, which allows them to act before issues begin to impact cost or service performance. One of the best ways to move towards scenario-based planning is to enlist a system that allows access to real operational data. Organisations can test network configurations, refine routes based on actual constraints, and balance cost, capacity and service more effectively. With this kind of technology usage, previous time-consuming decisions can be made far more efficiently. When visibility or data is limited, routes aren’t as effective, and ETAs become unreliable. Therefore, operational inefficiencies increase, driving up costs and reducing service consistency. However, with realtime execution data, businesses can continuously refine routes, respond to issues as they arise and build operations that reflect how deliveries actually perform on the road, helping to deliver a more cost-effective and resilient delivery operation. Conclusion Sure, “OK” performance can hold when conditions are good. But logistics operations rarely operate in predictable conditions for long. As cost pressures increase, networks become more complex and customer expectations continue to rise, the margin for error continues to shrink. In this environment, performance that is simply “OK” won’t remain viable. With the geopolitical climate affecting almost all aspects of logistics operations, businesses must strengthen how their operations perform under pressure. That means improving planning accuracy, increasing visibility across execution and using data to make more informed decisions at both a strategic and operational level. Those that take steps to address these areas will be better positioned to control costs, maintain service levels and adapt as conditions change. Those who don’t risk being exposed when disruption inevitably occurs. www.descartes.com Why an “OK” Performance Is a Risk in Fleet Operations Andrew Tavener, Head of Fleet Marketing EMEA at Descartes

www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2026 Truck and Track 11 BUSINESS NEWS Haulage firm ET Morris & Sons has successfully transported the first load of fossil-free steel to land in the UK, using a Volvo FM Electric 4x2 tractor unit for a zero-tailpipe emission delivery. Produced by Swedish company SSAB, the steel was collected from the TSG Terminal at Hull docks and taken to the customer site in Brighouse, West Yorkshire – a 160-mile round trip. The FM Electric demonstrator used for the special delivery was supplied by Gareth Stone, Sales Director at Crossroads Truck & Bus. Its drivability and performance impressed ET Morris & Sons, which is exploring ways to decarbonise its 25-strong 100 per cent Volvo fleet. Jeremy Morris, Owner, ET Morris & Sons, says: “We do lots of work for SSAB but this was the first load of this new green steel that we have delivered. “To mark its arrival, they wanted it to be delivered using electric technology. We have a close relationship with Gareth and the team at Crossroads, and they kindly offered the use of their electric demonstrator. “It was interesting to see how the electric truck performed. It did the job with no difficulties. The driver enjoyed the experience and, with further advances in the technology, it’s something we’ll explore further in the future.” Volvo Trucks committed to cutting carbon across its operations Volvo has introduced SSAB’s fossil-free steel into the build of its heavy-duty electric trucks – the first manufacturer in the world to do so. The metal, named SSAB Zero, is made from recycled material and produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas. As a result, CO₂ is reduced by around 80% compared to the production of conventional steel using fossil energy. The steel is used mainly in the frame rails, the backbone of the truck upon which all other main components are mounted. As the availability of the low-carbon steel increases, it will also be introduced in other parts of the vehicles. Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris agreement and to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain by 2040, at the latest. www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2026 Truck and Track 15 BUSINESS NEWS New AI agent and machine learning capabilities transform large volumes of execution data to improve fleet performance. Descartes Systems Group the global leader in uniting logistics-intensive businesses in commerce, announced expanded artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities on its Global Logistics Network™ (GLN) with the introduction of the Descartes Fleet Data Intelligence™ platform. Built on the scale and real-world operational data of the GLN, the platform combines a new AI agent and machine learning (ML) capabilities to enhance on-time delivery, strengthen service level compliance and reduce cost per delivery while providing the visibility needed to measure, sustain and scale fleet performance improvements over time. “For fleets operating private or dedicated distribution networks, the highest-impact opportunity for AI lies in improving realworld execution,” said James Wee, General Manager, Fleet Management at Descartes. “Execution data contains the signals needed to enhance fleet performance but, historically, it hasn’t been fully leveraged. With the Fleet Data Intelligence platform, we apply AI to the trusted execution data flowing through the GLN to separate signal from noise and turn everyday fleet operations into a continuous source of learning and improvement.” New AI agent simplifies fleet performance analysis and drives continuous improvement: ■ The Fleet Data Intelligence platform introduces René, an AI agent that surfaces both real-time insights and longer-term improvement opportunities without requiring manual data extraction or specialized analytics expertise. ■ For day-to-day fleet performance, René enables planners, dispatchers and operations leaders to quickly investigate issues, test hypotheses and get immediate answers simply by asking questions, such as why routes ran faster in a given period, what is driving overtime or where service levels are at risk. ■ René also uncovers deeper, systemic patterns by analyzing large volumes of fleet execution data to identify trends and surface root causes of inefficiencies—for example, a group of drivers consistently logging excess miles due to manual route deviations—to take targeted action to improve performance. ML improves route density: ■ The platform also introduces ML capabilities that have increased route density by up to 30% in early deployments, enabling fleets to complete more stops without adding vehicles or drivers. ■ It generates more accurate service time predictions by learning from real-world delivery durations and route conditions across variables such as customer type, product characteristics, delivery volume, vehicle type, charging stop locations and geography. ■ Improved planning precision minimizes excess buffer time, idle capacity, missed delivery windows and route plans that diverge during execution, allowing companies to schedule more stops per driver within the same working hours. Performance visibility helps sustain and scale improvements: ■ In addition, the platform provides structured visibility into key performance metrics, enabling organizations to benchmark service levels and track the impact of operational changes over time. ■ By measuring improvements in areas such as route efficiency, service compliance and driver productivity, fleets can validate results, reinforce best practices and scale performance gains across their operations. “For organizations operating high-density, repeat-route delivery models—such as foodservice, beverage distribution and wholesale logistics—even small improvements in fleet performance can deliver significant financial impact,” said Ken Wood, EVP, Product Management at Descartes. “The ability to leverage trusted, real-world operational data from the GLN allows fleets to apply AI at scale to continuously improve execution using the data they generate every day to drive measurable performance gains.” www.descartes.com. Truck and Track Summer 2026 www.truckandtrack.com 16 Wilcomatic – the UK’s authorised distributor of the world’s leading gantry wash systems VEHICLE WASH SYSTEMS

www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2026 Truck and Track 17 Wilcomatic is pleased to be the authorised distributor of high specification Otto Christ commercial vehicle and car wash systems across Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Already featured at last year’s Commercial Vehicle show at the NEC Birmingham, Otto Christ’s latest gantry wash system, the NOVA, has more advanced features compared to the outgoing Magnum and Taurus ranges and maintains the legendary reliability of the German manufacturer. The NOVA rollover gantry system is a truck wash solution with three brushes available in three product variants, the Stripe, the Blade and the Stripe with LED displays. Dependent on the specification, the machine dimensions range from 4.82m to 5.15m high and 4.6m to 4.88m wide. The passage width (vehicle width) is 3.4m and the wash height is up to 5m. The housing features new panelling with optional integrated LED lighting and illuminated driver command. Speed of operation – the NOVA is the fastest of its kind. Large fleets require fast and effective washing technology. The big challenge is performing a complete wash on the front, side, roof and rear surfaces of the vehicle in order to minimise operating costs within a short wash time. To achieve this, the NOVA can be operated in a semi-stationary operation (2.5-minute wash programme) and/or in the overrun wash operation. The innovative roller concept of the NOVA provides the perfect combination of quality and quantity for vehicle washing and is therefore especially recommended for cleaning in shift operations at transport companies, as a powerful commercial vehicle wash unit, or for larger haulage companies to wash their fleets. Wash brushes supplied as standard are polyethylene brushes which are the tried and tested standard. In addition, users may choose POWERBRUSH + AND SENSOFIL+ which provide low abrasion on the vehicle paint. They are available in a variety of colours from black grey to flame red and feature increased brush diameter and optimal immersion depth for better wash performance. Oscillating rotor nozzles ensure the dirtiest chassis zones are covered. The nozzles are available in various heights and additional nozzle units, each with three nozzles, can be added in and activated for the middle and upper areas of the vehicle. JETSTREAM is a high-pressure wash option that can be added to the portal frame for vehicles with challenging VEHICLE WASH SYSTEMS

Truck and Track Summer 2026 www.truckandtrack.com 18 geometries such as silo trucks and special vehicles. The JETSTREAM high pressure device is also designed to preclean very heavily soiled vehicles such as tipper trucks. Four electro-mechanically oscillating high pressure nozzle units per wash system side, equipped with contra rotating high pressure blast nozzles, spray the vehicle powerfully whilst the wash portal moves. The front and rear wash is performed by the integrated swivel device for the high-pressure nozzle units. The manual pre-cleaning effort required by the pre-wash staff is significantly reduced with the JETSTREAM. The UNDERBODY WASH SYSTEM features a stationary nozzle cane (under floor) to clean the vehicle’s undersides while the vehicle is entering the wash hall without losing time. We offer two variants that can be combined with corresponding rotary pumps. The DISCONTINUOUS LATERAL BRUSH ensures the best wash result without leaving wash shadows. It enables continuous and more effective cleaning under the mirrors, and is available in different wash heights and can therefore be individually adapted to any fleet as required. The additional pair of lateral brushes ensures optimum cleaning without losing flexibility. An ACTIVE FOAM DEVICE ensures comprehensive application of the wash chemicals via active foam nozzles. The chemicals achieve longer adhesion for effective dirt removal. An optional polishing application is also available with separate dosing equipment. AEROPRO HIGH PERFORMANCE DRYER: The outstanding feature of the AEROPRO dryer is that the airflow starts being directed towards the front of the vehicle slanted from above. By pivoting the blower units or air outlets, the air current can be directed towards lateral vehicle sections or roof and rear sections. WATER RECYCLING: Water is precious. That makes it even more important to budget it with extra care. Pure drinking water is often too precious for washing vehicles, which is why it makes sense to use a circulation system to recycle the washing water used. In addition to ecological aspects, legal regulations and economic factors, such as the cost for drinking water and sewage, also play a part in this decision. FONTIS water preparation units have been developed especially for use with vehicle washing plants. In their compact form, they combine all the technology including the washing water storage tank, a quartz-gravel filter and a booster pump. The FONTIS can be equipped with an optional chemical pre-treatment stage (flocculation). Truck and Track Summer 2026 www.truckandtrack.com 20 GoWash, a national fleet washing account has now added HGV washing services to its offering, adding even more convenience to GoWash fleets and users. With this addition, companies running any sort of fleet can keep vehicles clean by utilising the GoWash network right across the UK. The GoWash network in the UK now has reached over 900 sites including: ■ 500 hand wash sites - for cars and vans up to 3.5T ■ 250 automatic sites - for cars and vans (up to Transit size) ■ 80 HGV wash sites - for vans and Heavy Goods Vehicles ■ 80 mobile operators - cleaning cars, vans and HGVs at your depot The addition of HGV washing has been something that has been in the pipeline for a while now, Managing Director Jonny Billing explained, ‘In my previous work in the HGV sector I had been used to HGV fleets and LCV fleets being mainly two separate groups, but during the last 5-10 years there has been a major shift in companies adopting a mixed fleet to suit the needs of their contracts and customers. HGV companies doing last mile deliveries have added LCVs to their fleet while traditional LCV fleets have added larger vehicles to their operations. This has left a gap in the market of vehicle washing for someone who can cover all vehicles of all sizes. In my previous company, SNAP, we were solely focused on HGVs washing and smaller vehicles were never considered. While here at GoWash we have created a new market for LCVs that was previously overlooked, we have now taken the steps to knit both together.’ Accessing the network of HGV sites has come through a partnership with TRAVIS, a Dutch company who are leading the way of HGV washing and parking right across Europe. Jonny continues, ‘I have known the team at TRAVIS for nearly a decade now and we have always wanted to find a way to work together, I am pleased that time has now come! We are very much looking forward to working closely with them and as their network of HGV washes in the UK grows, our customers will gain access to more and more sites.’ How does the GoWash Fleet Account work?
