Truck and Track Summer 2023 www.truckandtrack.com 64 DANGEROUS GOODS TRUCK & TRAILER SOLUTIONS WELCOME TOALLPORTS GROUP allportsgroup.co.uk The classes that pose highest risks with direct sunlight/elevated temperatures - (but not restricted to) are denoted below: Class 2 Gas Cylinders – must be kept away from direct sunlight and in the shade, or under a (heat-resistant) canopy and placed in a well-ventilated area (away from combustible material). Class 3 Flammable Liquids – especially those of low flash point (especially Packing Group I and II) – must be kept away from direct sunlight, and stored in the shade, or under a (heat-resistant) canopy and in a ventilated area (away from combustible material). Class 4 Flammable and Reactive Solids – these, like Class 3, must be kept away from direct sunlight in the shade, or under a (heat-resistant) canopy and in a ventilated area (away from combustible material). Remember – in a fire situation, sub-class 4.3 are ‘Dangerous when Exposed to Water’. Class 5.1 Oxidising Agents and Class 5.2 Organic Peroxides – must be kept away from direct sunlight in the shade, or under a (heat-resistant) canopy and in a ventilated are (away from combustible material and Class 3 Flammable Liquids). Class 6.1 Toxic and Class 6.2 Biologically Infectious – must be kept away from direct sunlight in the shade and in a ventilated area (away from combustible material). Though not flammable, they pose a rupture hazard. Class 8 Corrosive Liquids – must be kept away from direct sunlight in the shade and in a ventilated area (away from combustible material). Though not flammable, they pose a rupture hazard. Class 9 Environmentally Hazardous – must be kept away from direct sunlight in the shade and in a ventilated area. Though not flammable, they pose a rupture hazard. Remember that heat generated via UV sunlight can make IBCs, drums and cans ‘bow’ as well as rupture causing a release or spillage of flammable, corrosive, toxic or harmful vapours and liquids. Adroit housekeeping is also essential to avoid potential fire/combustion risks from overflowing bins, pallet debris, wastepaper etc. Class 1 (Explosive) and Class 7 (Radioactive) have special instructions under ADR – and their application will be obtained from your DGSA. Duty of care I’ve always worked under the mantra for a robust duty of care ethos – ‘Plan for the Best Outcome BUT always Prepare for the Worst Outcome’ In my professional opinion, Dangerous Goods Professionals must have a formal agreement with an emergency response partner to assist the operation (in-concert with the emergency services) in the event of an emergency situation, be it at a depot or on a public highway (ADR) or at a port/harbour (IMDG). Adler and Allan is a leading player in emergency and/or environmental response and has an extensive UK depot structure to assist your operation. Let’s all hope for good weather this Summer, and not wishing to ‘rain on the parade’ - but if you are working with Dangerous Goods, please ensure you and your team(s) are prepared for the hazards of UV sunlight and direct heat pose toward dangerous goods.
