The future with environmental & efficiency benefits

The future with environmental & efficiency benefits

Take away Brexit and the top of the political agenda is dominated by the environment. CO2 in the atmosphere, methane generation by farm animals and plastics in the environment. We all want to do our best to help make the world a great place to live for successive generations.

The transport industry is always a target for groups wanting to protect the environment. Our industry generates CO2, NOX, dust from brakes and tyres and of course plastic waste from single use security seals that protect their load not to mention the millions of miles of shrink wrap used on palletised goods.

Unisto is a long-standing manufacturer of plastic security seals for the transport and distribution industry and has long argued the case for securely managing plastic seals throughout their life ending with recycling the used and broken waste product. Unisto has also championed reusable electronic seals ever since acquiring Encrypta Electronics in 2002; removing millions of single use plastic seals from use on vehicles and replacing them with reusable, fit and forget, easy to read electronic seals that displace up to 35,000 single use seals each. When that is taken together with the additional benefit of not needing to order, manage, secure, distribute and control single use plastic seals, it makes a powerful case.

The next stage in Unisto’s journey is to make reusable seals more data capable, so providing secure information that will allow security and operations departments to manage by exception, focusing attention on the small number of security issues rather than the vast bulk of unexceptional, straightforward deliveries and collections.

Unisto has been at this point before, back in 2005 when alerts and data collection via RFID from Crypta Data Tag electronic seals on vehicles at the Nisa Today’s site at Scunthorpe was implemented. Then at the bleeding edge of security seal technology there were several factors that stymied success, not least flaky supporting, background tech that was inclined to ‘fall over’ interrupting smooth connectivity and causing supply chain disruption. With the advent of android operating systems and reliable near-field, short range and Wi-Fi communication platforms a whole new world has opened-up to smooth-out previously clunky processes.

During 2020/21 Unisto will be promoting new solutions that will increase the functionality of our reusable seals to include track and trace and security anomaly alert benefits that can only add to the strong environmental grounds for change.

Recently analysing our range of seals for CO2 emission purposes with a third-party specialist consultant, Unisto obtained data that compares electronic multiple use security seals with single use plastic and were astonished by the result. The CO2 generated in the manufacture of their C2K and Manta reusable seal is very close to that generated by just 1,000 single use plastic seals and given one C2K can replace 35,000 plastic single use seals, is a compelling argument for change. Full analysis data is available on request please visit www.unisto.co.uk and click ‘contact us’ or ‘phone Unisto for a data sheet. The future is reuse, management by exception and very exciting!
