Culina Group – Going above and beyond in a time of adaptation

Culina Group – Going above and beyond in a time of adaptation

Despite the challenges that the UK and indeed the world continue to face with the Covid-19 pandemic, market leading 3PL provider Culina Group continues to be a magnificent success story following a fantastic year of growth.

2020 was certainly another encouraging year for the business with growth continuing, investment in infrastructure expansion, acquisition, and new customers coming on board. All of this whilst also working hard to help keep the UK operating as normally as possible during this difficult time.

2020 was truly a year of adaptation for everyone not just in terms of our personal lives but also our professional lives. This period of adaptation looks set to continue throughout the first half of 2021 and, because of this, Culina Group have positioned themselves so that they can operate as efficiently as possible.

Culina Group is undoubtedly on the frontline as they keep supermarkets stocked and, in turn, families fed. It’s a real responsibility and a huge credit to every member of the company’s 11,000-strong team who are performing so efficiently and with such dedication. This is a business that prides itself on its teams of knowledgeable, passionate and committed colleagues who always go above and beyond in their roles.

“We really are a business that is all about its people. We are where we are today because of the fantastic people we employ across our network, all of whom are dedicated, motivated, and committed to making Culina Group a success. It is inspiring to see how our teams have really gone above and beyond over the last 12 months to ensure that our communities have everything they need during this difficult time whilst also ensuring a positive business performance. We firmly believe in the value of our people and we invest in them accordingly by giving them everything they need to develop themselves and their careers.” Said Culina Group CEO Thomas van Mourik

2020 saw some very significant developments for Culina Group. The most high profile of which was the acquisition of Fowler Welch in June, an established and highly respected business in the market place. This move enabled Culina Group to well and truly expand its operations into the fresh produce logistics sector. The acquisition of the Fowler Welch business was a logical step for Culina Group due to the synergistic cultures, operations, and leadership. Fowler Welch is now further strengthening key contracts with significant clients with the backing of Culina Group. It has been said before but Culina Group really is a family of like-minded businesses all working in their own fields yet with a common goal of growth through service excellence and innovation.

“The acquisition of Fowler Welch was an extremely positive move for Culina Group and we are very proud to have another business with such a great reputation joining our family.” Said Thomas

Culina Group also had some significant developments in regards to its network. The business opened a new 335,000 sq ft facility in Banbury right next to the M40 motorway that added significant capacity to the Great Bear ambient operation. The chilled side of the business also expanded its network with the addition of sites in Tilbury, Hoddesdon, Lutterworth, and Nottingham. All of these new facilities provided job opportunities in the local areas whilst bolstering the service that Culina Group can offer to its clients.

“2020 was a tough year all round but we retained our momentum whilst continuing to identify opportunities which, most importantly, we acted on. We also consistently provided, and continue to provide, excellent levels of service to all of our clients and this naturally contributes to our growth. This proactive approach that we live by is what strengthens our continuity of relationships and business confidence.” Said Thomas

As mentioned, Culina Group is a business whose success is built on its people. With a comprehensively diverse and passionate workforce, Culina Group are constantly striving to raise the bar when it comes to great places to work. The company recognises the importance and value of its people and is continually investing in them by providing high quality work environments, exceptional training and development programmes, and for its drivers the best fleet available including top of the range tractor units replaced on a regular rolling schedule. Culina Group is always looking to build and strengthen its family approach to business.

Culina Group employees have access to the company’s ‘Professional Development Programme’ or as it’s known internally the ‘RISE Programme’ (RECOGNISE – INSPIRE – SUPPORT – EMPOWER) which is open to all colleagues. The RISE programme is a comprehensive prospectus of recognised training solutions catering for all levels. There is something for everyone in this programme from courses aimed at colleagues who are new to a role or have some experience but want to develop them further, to courses for Senior and Executive Management with qualifications equivalent to degree level. It’s a repertoire of qualifications that will increase as Culina Group continues to develop the programme. It’s something that Culina Group is very proud of indeed.

“We deliver high-quality learning tailored to the needs of individuals and our organisation. Each programme aims to support new and existing employees and help individuals to achieve personal and professional goals. We want to help our colleagues to develop new knowledge, skills, and behaviours that will support their progress within their chosen career.” commented Mike Roberts - Head of Learning and Development for Culina Group.

The feedback from employees participating in the RISE Programme has been overwhelmingly positive and it is initiatives like this that make Culina Group an attractive employer to those in the market for a new job role or a change in career.

Culina Group has a great story and it’s been impressive to see how the business has grown since it was established back in 1994. The future continues to look very exciting for this market leading food and drink logistics specialist.

As an organisation with such a spectacular growth trajectory, Culina Group is continually looking for high calibre people to join its family. The business operates a dedicated website promoting a wide variety of job opportunities for talented people looking to commit to its ethos and direction.
