www.truckandtrack.com Winter 2019 Truck and Track 3 Truck and Track The Haulage & Logistics Buyers Magazine Truck and Track The Haulage & Logistics Buyers Magazine FOREWORD by Barbara Ryan, Publishing Director, Truck and Track 2020 – a year of opportunity I don’t think anyonewould dispute that it’s been something of a roller coaster ride over the past few years as the UK has onsidered and argued the advantages or otherwise of leaving the European Union. During this time, as a nation, we have been faced with plenty of ‘will we/won’t we’ moments. Well, the result of December’s general election means that we now know the answer. So what happens next? On the one hand we could look back nostalgically and bemoanthepassingoftimeswhenweranourbusinesses efficiently and concentrated on providing a professional service which resulted in a profitable return. We were successful so we continued to do it. On the other hand, however, althoughwemay anticipate difficulties in the post-Brexit era, I believe that we need to identify and grasp any opportunities for continuing to do business. After all, what’s the alternative? Roll up in a ball and turn away from showing the world how our industry has always been resourceful, determined and, ultimately, successful? Like it or loathe it, Brexit has, at the very least, given the UK’s business community certainty. Over the past several years, we’ve been constantly told by the CBI, financial institutions and any number of economic ‘experts’ that uncertainty is the absolute worst scenario against which business ownersmust try to prosper. Well, with uncertainty having now been swept away, it’s time to look to the future. We could all do worse than heed the advice given by a number of organisations including the Freight Transport Association, the Road Haulage Association and the Federation of Small Businesses plus various government-backed advice initiatives. (see below for a selection of useful websites). Anyway, my view is that the end of our membership of the European Union is not the end of the world; let alone the end of our ability to trade with our local and global customers. Time will tell what trading arrangements will be agreed going forward but I would encourage us all tomake sure that we don’t overlook the opportunities because we’re too busy focusing on problems that may never materialise. I wish us all an extremely successful, fulfilling and profitable 2020.
