Truck and Track Summer 2021

www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2021 Truck and Track 3 FOREWORD by Barbara Ryan, Publishing Director, Truck and Track I mentioned in the Spring issue of Truck and Track that I was optimistic about the future of the UK’s logistics industry and this latest issue is packed full of success stories and news of significant achievements. First of all, you will have seen the announcement of United Pallet Network’s 20th Anniversary emblazoned on our front cover. This milestone is also celebratedwithin an eight page fold-out supplement charting the company’s success located in the centre of the issue. Alongside the supplement, you will see the latest upbeat report from Paul Sanders, Chairman of the Association of Pallet Networks (APN). He confirms that operational statistics of the APN are very encouraging for the sector with total pallet volumes increasing by 26% year on year withmuch of the growth in Next Day services. However, he’s not alone in highlighting the critical shortage of drivers. Descartes is oneof anumber of companies that champions the use of latest optimisation technology and automating route planning to help mitigate the current driver shortage. Apparently, for large organisations, this could be the equivalent of hiring dozens of additional drivers. Continuing the theme of utilising latest technology, this issue includes a substantial feature on Intermodal Transport Software. Grangemouth-based John Mitchell Haulage and Warehousing has teamed up with Cargo Systems to future proof its operation. With its current fleet numbering over 150 trucks, and with vehicle investment planned, the company is committed to providing the tools for its drivers to do the best job possible. The upcoming CV Show (31st August – 2nd September) also comes under the spotlight. In the words of Murray Ellis, Show Director, “The atmosphere is building as hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors look to welcome back live networking, face-to-face business and new product launches at the 2021 Commercial Vehicle Show. It remains themost important event in the calendar for everyone working in road transport operations, logistics and distribution-based businesses.” Finally, check out the announcement from the Culina Group regarding its takeover of GreenWhiteStar Acquisitions. The deal takes the Group’s overall turnover up to £2.2 billion, a combinedworkforce of around 22,000 staff, approaching 20 million sq ft of warehousing and a joint fleet of more than 5,500 vehicles. I hope you enjoy reading this issue.
