www.truckandtrack.com Summer 2020 Truck and Track 3 FOREWORD by Barbara Ryan, Publishing Director, Truck and Track I ended my Foreword in the Spring issue by wishing everyone good health in the face of extremely challenging circumstances. My wish, of course, remains the same as we all strive to cope with trading circumstances that have become, arguably, even more challenging. Apart from the disruption caused by Covid-19, the logistics industry remains understandably concerned about the implications and impact of Brexit. However, you’ll see that this issue contains articles from companies that are implementing a host of enterprising strategies designed to ensure that wheels keep turning and freight continues to arrive at our sea ports and airports for onward distribution. Pallet networks have responded well to the new scenario of doing business in the UK and beyond. The Association of Pallet Networks reports that the eight UK pallet networks it represents comprise 750 regional distribution specialists all of whom have continued to work throughout lockdown. Palletways London also continues to flourish and has been appointed by drinks logistics business Tradeteam to distribute beers, ciders, wines, spirits and soft drinks. Success is also the name of the game for United Pallet Network. The company has not only appointed a new regional director, but also has a new Iberia partner providing a full range of palletised freight distribution services to Spain and Portugal. This issue also features a spotlight on Culina Group which employs a workforce of 11,000 employees at 70 sites across the UK and Ireland. As a major 3PL, the Group’s turnover has quadrupled over the past five years and it now stands as a £1 billion plus organisation. Telematics is another industry sector at the forefront of new technology and, in recent times, has seen increased understanding of how its implementation can bring real efficiency and cost savings. Contributions from Descartes examine the importance of supply chain resilience, the ecommerce revolution and how to take back control of customs clearance. Also in this issue, Queen’s Award winner TruTac describes the launch of another compliance-control product whilst tachograph manufacturer Continental explains how tachograph data can provide a great overview of drivers and vehicles when used correctly by transport managers in their reporting. In conclusion, I think it’s safe to say that this issue is packed with news and information that accurately portrays the positivity and resourcefulness that typifies our industry. Furthermore, I’m confident that companies of all sizes possess the essential qualities of grit and determination to ensure continuing success.
