www.truckandtrack.com Winter 2025/26 Truck and Track 3 FOREWORD by Barbara Ryan, Publishing Director, Truck and Track Last year was a very busy time but this year promises to be both challenging and exciting in equal measures. I’m not sure if our industry needs any more challenges political unrest at home and the wider world will certainly trickle down through the channels and affect us all! I was very excited when a personal invitation popped through my letter box requesting my presence at the United Parcel Network (UPN) members Annual Awards 2025 presentation evening. This event was held at the Orchard Hotel part of the East Midlands Conference Centre. An opportunity to wear my new cocktail dress! The event was quite an extravaganza with many members, staff plus representation from companies and persons who had helped in some way with this year’s success. Everything was delivered to a very high standard the meal, toasts and speeches were well received and delivered. As were the well earned prizes. The main entertainment being the celebrity darts event followed by an auction and raffle which raised a generous £17,000. The proceeds will be divided up and given to three charities. Truck and Track Winter 2025/26 www.truckandtrack.com 4 BUSINESS NEWS TRUCK & TRAILER SOLUTIONS WELCOME TOALLPORTS GROUP allportsgroup.co.uk Major step forward as Midlands Rail Hub Alliance confirmed The four partners which will design and develop the most transformative railway upgrade in the Midlands have been confirmed. Midlands Rail Hub, which could cost around £1.75bn if delivered in full, will improve journeys, help to boost economic growth, and better connect people with opportunities, jobs, and new houses. The new Midlands Rail Hub Alliance - confirmed to include VolkerRail, Laing O’Rourke, AtkinsRéalis and Siemens Mobility, working alongside Network Rail - will design and develop Midlands Rail Hub and support the build phase. This will include connecting the Chiltern main line, which runs into Moor Street, with the Camp Hill lines which run towards the South West and East Midlands, via two new chords in Bordesley, near Birmingham city centre. Alongside this, work is also being prioritised to progress smaller changes to the existing railway which will provide passengers and communities with quicker benefits, including new journey options and more trains. This includes reopening platform 4 at Snow Hill station, so additional Chiltern Railways services can run directly between Birmingham’s business district and London Marylebone, and redeveloping Kings Norton station and the lines through it so extra Cross City trains can be added and new Midlands Rail Hub-enabled services can call there. The Midlands Rail Hub Alliance - working with the sponsoring partner team of Network Rail, West Midlands Rail Executive, Department for Transport, and Midlands Connect - will plan timescales for the development of Midlands Rail Hub, with early passenger benefits expected to be realised by the early 2030s. Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said: “The Midlands Rail Hub will be transformational for millions of people across the country by improving capacity across the network, allowing more services and better reliability. “Thanks to £123 million of Government funding we are unlocking jobs opportunities, stimulating housing growth and better connecting our communities, forging ahead with our promise to create modern transport Britain needs and deserves.” Denise Wetton, Network Rail’s Central route director, said: “We want the huge improvements this major investment and upgrade will unlock – including access to opportunities, more jobs, economic growth, and new houses - to benefit people, communities, and businesses as soon as possible. “Confirming the Midlands Rail Hub alliance partners means this vital regional and national project can really start to move forward and we are focusing hard to start work on this transformative project as quickly as possible.” Mal Drury-Rose, West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE) director, said: “After years of supporting this project, we are thrilled that it will come to fruition, delivering huge benefits for passengers in the West Midlands. “We are committed to ensuring that it’s more than just a rail scheme - that it maximises the benefits of HS2 coming to the region, creating a major new transport interchange at Moor Street and Curzon Street stations, and delivers on our wider ambitions for social mobility, transport integration, regeneration and economic growth.” Maria Machancoses, chief executive of Midlands Connect, said: “Today is a big moment for the region - the Midlands Rail Hub alliance will finally allow us to start delivering real improvements passengers will feel on the ground as early as 2028. “We must keep driving this project forward and work with Government to get the full programme funded and delivered, because only then will the Midlands realise its full potential.” The overhaul of the railway in Birmingham and the West Midlands, including changing how the city’s three main stations - New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill - are served by train services from across the region and beyond, will have significant benefits to local, regional and national passenger journeys. The transformation of the network will include running more train services on key routes through Birmingham, significantly improving connections and journey options for the millions of people who use the railway every day.

Truck and Track Winter 2025/26 www.truckandtrack.com 6 BUSINESS NEWS Descartes Systems Group, the global leader in uniting logistics-intensive businesses in commerce, announced the results of its Global Forwarder/Broker Benchmark Study of more than 400 companies, highlighting a logistics industry navigating global uncertainty and technological opportunity. According to the study, global instability (60%), tariff changes (42%) and customer pricing pressure (61%) are among the most significant challenges freight forwarders and customs brokers expect to face over the next five years. In the face of these headwinds, however, 67% of respondents viewed technology as fundamental or highly important to growth, and an overwhelming 55% cited implementing new technologies as the top strategy to grow over competitors (see Figure 1). Respondents viewed the ability to leverage automation and artificial intelligence (AI) as vital to achieving long-term efficiency, compliance agility and profitability. AI (65%) was cited as the technology expected to deliver the greatest value to organizations over the next two years. While many traditional technologies experienced a decline in perceived value, both rate management (20%) and regulatory compliance systems (30%) showed gains in 2025 (see Figure 2). Rate management solutions have grown in importance for the ability to deliver automated, self-service rating and quoting capabilities to customers, while the value of regulatory compliance systems has increased given the complexities of meeting quickly evolving regulatory demands. Other key findings include: Manual processes hinder growth: 25% cited manual workflows as the top inhibitor to growth, with smaller companies especially constrained by limited access to capital (27%). AI dominates technology investment: 55% of respondents plan to prioritize AI investment over the next two years. Competitive edge shifting: Tailored services (33%) overtook high service (31%) as the top competitive advantage, signaling a move toward more customized and data-driven customer experiences. Importance of technology diverges by company size: While 60% of large companies view technology as fundamental to growth, only 27% of small companies share that view. “Over the nine editions of the study, the role of technology has changed significantly for freight forwarders and customs brokers—from streamlining back-office operations, to enabling digital customer engagement, to harnessing intelligent automation,” said Scott Sangster, General Manager, Logistics Services Providers at Descartes. “This shift is mirrored in the industry’s IT investment priorities, which have evolved in step with technological maturity: from technology for efficiency in 2019–2020, digitization in 2021– 2022 and now intelligence and automation through 2025. While forwarders and brokers are facing unprecedented global trade volatility today, many organizations remain optimistic about Descartes’ Study Finds 67% of Freight Forwarders and Customs Brokers View Technology as Fundamental to Growth Automation and AI emerge as critical differentiators for logistics services providers facing global instability, tariff volatility and cost pressures Figure 1: What strategies are expected to help differentiate your organization from and grow over competitors? Following the hive-up earlier this year, Howard Tenens Logistics and Howard Tenens Property will now operate as a single entity, marking a significant milestone in the group’s strategy to strengthen its position across the UK logistics, property, and energy sectors. From today, the company will be known simply as Howard Tenens. A single brand and logo will represent the full breadth of its capabilities, encompassing third-party logistics, commercial and residential property management and energy services under a subsidiary company, HT Power. While the visual identity has evolved, the values that have shaped the business for generations remain firmly at the core: Connected, Supportive, Progressive, and Resilient. This consolidation brings together all core elements, including warehousing, value added services, distribution, international forwarding, property, and facilities management under one clear and consistent identity, creating a more streamlined customer experience, strengthening the group’s ability to create and deliver value for our customer base. The unified structure enhances operational coherence and positions Howard Tenens for continued expansion in a rapidly evolving logistics landscape. Alongside this transition, the business will roll out a single, refreshed Howard Tenens logo to be used across all corporate communications, operations, and customer touchpoints. Jamie Hartles, Group CEO, shared: “This is about far more than a logo. It’s about bringing our services together under a single name that reflects both our heritage and our ambitions for the future, rooted in the long-standing belief that property and logistics are strongest when they work hand in hand. Howard Tenens has always been a family business guided by strong values, and this step gives us greater clarity and strength as we continue to grow and lead the industry. We’re excited to begin this next chapter and the opportunities it creates for our people, our customers, and our future.” Karl Hodgkinson, Group Development, Marketing & Innovation Director, stated: “Howard Tenens remains committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable, and customer-focused services across the UK, underpinned by decades of expertise and a long-term commitment to responsible and sustainable growth. The refreshed brand identity began rolling out across all channels in December 2025, and will continue to be implemented throughout 2026”. Howard Tenens Unifies Brands Following Consolidation
Truck and Track Winter 2025/26 www.truckandtrack.com 8 BUSINESS NEWS Dennis Eagle Enhances Efficiency with Allison xFE™ Transmissions Dennis Eagle, the leading manufacturer of refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) in the UK, will specify xFE™ fully automatic transmissions from Allison Transmission, on two and three axle Dennis Eagle Elite+ chassis. Allison is a global leader in commercial and defence vehicle propulsion solutions. The Allison xFE (for extra Fuel Economy) transmission features FuelSense® 2.0 Max, an innovative technology package designed to help customers maximise vehicle performance and efficiency. This will see Dennis Eagle customers in domestic and export markets benefit from fuel savings of up to six per cent against the demanding duty-cycles and stop-start nature of refuse collection applications compared to transmission without the xFE technology. One of the enabling features of FuelSense 2.0 Max is DynActive® Shifting, which uses an algorithm to choose the most efficient shift points from an infinite number of combinations based on customer specifications and engine fuel map, as well as vehicle and environmental parameters. Neutral at Stop reduces the load on the engine during low-speed coasting, as well as when the vehicle is stationary, for further fuel savings. In addition, enhanced Acceleration Rate Management helps to mitigate aggressive driving by automatically controlling engine torque, with five levels of control. The xFE models specified by Dennis Eagle are the 3000 xFETM and 3000R (for retarder) xFETM. “At a time when operators are under increasing pressure to cut costs and reduce emissions, Dennis Eagle continues to enhance the Elite+ with innovations that deliver meaningful savings without compromise,” says Simon McCulloch, Technical Sales Manager at Dennis Eagle. “Technologies such as automatic Neutral at Stop and shift points optimised for real-world RCV duty-cycles combined with the trusted durability and ease of use of the Allison transmissions give fleet operators a clear edge in fuel efficiency and, in turn, reduced emissions.” Jade Noble-Byrne, OEM Account Manager, UK & ROI, at Allison Transmission, said: “UK RCV fleets already have a high expectation of the Dennis Eagle-Allison Transmission combination and this release follows a long history of innovation between our two companies. The xFE transmission will help Dennis Eagle customers to get the best performance from their vehicles. A great example of this is the learning algorithm used by FuelSense® 2.0 Max, which, rather than relying on fixed points on a shift table, continuously finds the ideal balance for the duty-cycle, so that vehicles operate as efficiently as possible at all times.” All Dennis Eagle Elite+ two and three axle chassis to roll off the production line will benefit from the addition of Allison Transmissions’ xFE transmissions with FuelSense® 2.0 Max technology, an innovative package of features designed to help customers maximise vehicle performance and efficiency. © Dennis Eagle The xFE models specified by Dennis Eagle are the 3000 xFE (pictured) and 3000R (for retarder) xFE. © Allison Transmission TRUCK & TRAILER SOLUTIONS WELCOME TOALLPORTS GROUP allportsgroup.co.uk
www.truckandtrack.com Winter 2025/26 Truck and Track 9 BUSINESS NEWS Senior Traffic Commissioner Kevin Rooney delivered the keynote address, emphasising that compliance is more than a safety requirement; it is a strategic business enabler. “We’re trying to sell compliance as part of your business, not something you have to do as well as, but as part of it,” he told delegates. Effective compliance systems, he noted, reduce the risk of roadside prohibitions, cut downtime, and improve firsttime MOT pass rates. Rooney also updated attendees on forthcoming licence fee changes, pointing out that fees have remained static since 2009 and currently apply equally whether an operator runs one vehicle or 1,000 across multiple centres. He outlined the OTC’s move towards a digital-by-default model, including the newly launched digital messaging service that replaces email communication with caseworkers. Rooney advised operators to allow the full 10-day response window before following up, as additional messages can reset the waiting time. Cybersecurity formed a key part of his message. With the OTC facing thousands of hacking attempts each day, he warned: “The biggest threat to your business is your data and IT systems. If you’re relying on technology; telematics, routing systems, fleet management systems, make sure they’re safe.” Rooney highlighted the emerging benefits of technology, including early examples of predictive maintenance using AI tools to determine when components need attention. He urged fleets to adopt data-driven inspection intervals, arguing that fixed six-week schedules show insufficient risk management. Inspection frequencies, he stressed, should reflect actual vehicle use and inspection findings. He also referenced the new Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS), developed by the DVSA, the OTC and industry partners, to help operators identify qualified maintenance providers. Rooney encouraged fleets to use such tools to strengthen compliance while also focusing on workplace culture: “We have to lead by example. There needs to be a culture of learning and continual professional development – that’s why coming to events like this is important.” Senior Traffic Commissioner Kevin Rooney: Compliance is a strategic enabler Senior Traffic Commissioner Kevin Rooney Associated British Ports (ABP) in the Humber has announced its full support for Hull Maritime by becoming the project’s first corporate partner, committing a significant amount to help bring the city’s rich maritime story to life. The funding will play a pivotal role in supporting the redevelopment of the Hull Maritime Museum – once a key former dock administration building, particularly in telling the story of the port’s past, present, and future – with a strong focus on green energy and sustainability. The transformed museum is set to reopen in summer 2026. The new exhibitions will highlight Hull’s global trade connections, showcasing the city’s historic and modern-day trade routes and destinations. Visitors will be immersed in stories that reflect Hull’s maritime legacy and its evolving role in the world. Andrew Dawes, Regional Director for the Humber Ports, said: “We’re delighted to support Hull Maritime and the transformation of the Hull Maritime Museum, a place that resonates deeply with our heritage and purpose. As the former dock office, the museum stands on the very foundations of Hull’s maritime legacy – one that ABP is proud to continue through our mission of Keeping Britain Trading. “Our involvement in the museum’s new chapter has been both meaningful and personal. This is more than sponsorship – it’s a celebration of the people, places, and progress that define the Humber’s maritime identity, past and present.” Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “We’re especially grateful for ABP’s donation which goes towards a £2.6m match-funding goal and becoming the first and major corporate partner, showing their support for a project that is transforming and celebrating Hull’s rich maritime story. “This demonstrates their confidence in our ability to deliver a world-class maritime experience that no other city can.” ABP has long been a key player in Hull’s maritime history. Today, the Humber Estuary remains one of the UK’s busiest trading gateways, with over 40,000 shipping movements each year – a testament to its enduring importance and vitality. This partnership marks a significant milestone in the Hull Maritime project. The Hull Maritime project includes the refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Hull Maritime Museum, a new bespoke storage facility for the reserve collection, the transformation of Hull city centre’s major green space – Queen’s Gardens, the North End Shipyard and two historic vessels, the Arctic Corsair and Spurn Lightship. The Galacticos kicked off their league journey last weekend with a thrilling 2-2 draw — narrowly missing out on a debut win after conceding a last-minute equaliser. Despite the result, the performance spoke volumes. With only a few weeks of training together, the squad showed determination, passion, and real promise for the season ahead. But AFC Willenhall Galacticos is about more than just football. Born from a powerful vision — to make grassroots football accessible and inclusive — the club exists to give local children a chance to play without financial barriers. In a community where youth centres are few and far between, the Galacticos offer something vital: a safe, positive, and completely free environment for young people to be active, make friends, and grow. At a time when rising costs are making it harder for families to get involved in sport, this team is breaking down those barriers — not just on the pitch, but in the lives of kids across Wolverhampton. Thanks to dedicated sponsorships and ongoing fundraising, the Galacticos are fully self-funded — proof that community spirit and determination can create real change and give every child the chance to take part in the beautiful game, stay active, make friends, and crucially, keep off the streets and away from their devices. Truck and Track Winter 2025/26 www.truckandtrack.com 12 BUSINESS NEWS Finbarr O’Neill celebrates fifty years with new Volvo FH tipper County Cork-based Finbarr O’Neill has taken delivery of a Volvo FH 500 10x4 tipper, liveried to mark the company’s 50th year in business. The truck marks a continuation of the duo’s longstanding relationship, with the customer having purchased its first Volvos in 1989. Supplied by Mark McCarthy, Transport Solutions Executive at McCarthy Commercials, the new arrival joins a 22-strong fleet, of which approximately two-thirds are Volvos. It will be used to deliver a comprehensive range of sand, aggregates and quarry products from the business’s four quarries to customers across Ireland. The deal is particularly prominent for current Directors Lucia, John, Francis and Finbarr O’Neill, with 2025 marking half a century since their late father, Finbarr O’Neill Senior, spotted an opportunity to meet the demands of the growing construction and farming markets in Cork city and the wider county. “Our story began 50 years ago when our parents decided to take a chance and start a business from the ground up,” says Finbarr. “They worked hard to make that happen, and those early efforts gave us the foundation we still rely on today. We take great pride in continuing what they began and making sure the business reflects the standards they set. “Volvo has been a key part of our journey – we also use Volvo loading shovels and dumpers in our quarries, so the brand plays a big role across our entire operation. When we spec’d our latest truck, we wanted something that would stand out and deliver real benefits for its driver. Full air suspension, spacious cab design, and premium features have transformed the experience behind the wheel – the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, especially with regards to the smooth ride.” Finbarr O’Neill’s rigid – mounted with Fitzgerald tipper bodywork – is powered by Volvo’s proven D13K engine generating 500 hp and 2,500 Nm of torque. Expected to be in service for at least the next six years, it is also equipped with a 12-speed I-Shift transmission, which makes driving easier, safer and more comfortable and can also deliver improved fuel economy. To further boost driving comfort and practicality, Finbarr O’Neill opted to include front and rear air suspension in the specification. In addition, the decision to select a five-axle configuration was driven by the need to maximise payload capacity, allowing the truck to carry heavier loads of aggregates and decorative stone efficiently. Inside the cab, creature comforts including an adjustable steering wheel with neck-tilt, dual armrest and leather upholstery ensures a premium driving environment. As part of the company’s 50th celebrations, the truck is adorned with a special logo to mark the occasion, which, combined with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloys, creates a stand-out finish. Another key factor behind the latest order was the strong working relationship the business has built with supplying dealer McCarthy Commercials. “The support we receive from McCarthys is top class,” adds Finbarr. “Their team understands the urgency of our work and responds quickly whenever we need assistance. Whether it is routine servicing or an unexpected breakdown, they act fast and keep us moving. Alongside Volvo’s strong resale value, that partnership is invaluable to us and is one of the key reasons we continue to choose Volvo year after year.” Backed by a full Volvo Gold contract for maximum peace of mind, the truck is expected to clock up to 70,000 km annually, operating five days a week. In addition to its headquarters in Ballincollig, Finbarr O’Neill also operates quarries in Ovens, Glenville, Mogeely and Dripsey. www.truckandtrack.com Winter 2025/26 Truck and Track 13 BUSINESS NEWS Asset Alliance Group puts down new roots at Huntapac Huntapac, a specialist in the growing, packing and transportation of root vegetables to the UK’s largest retailers, has struck its first deal with Asset Alliance Group, refreshing its fleet with 11 DAF XF 480 trucks. The Hunter family-owned farming business, which is based in Preston and is more than 80 years old, has grown by nurturing long-term relationships, a strategy that has also proved successful for Asset Alliance Group. Joanne Cleece, Head of Transport at Huntapac, says: “It’s our first time working with Asset Alliance Group and we’ve been really impressed so far. They are straight-talking, know their stuff and were able to deliver what we needed at a competitive price.” The 6x2 DAFs feature Sleeper High Cabs and luxury driver air-seats, with the trucks typically away from base for several nights at a time. Four are fitted with tipping gear and wet kits for use with bulk trailers, which deliver produce directly to Huntapac’s packhouse in Tarleton where it is washed, graded and packaged. Huntapac’s trucks cover 180,000km a year on average, and Asset Alliance Group has supplied the latest additions on a threeyear contract hire deal, which includes repair & maintenance. “We prefer to finance as we’re a high-mileage fleet, and the three-year warranty on the trucks means we’re well covered. Technology is changing very quickly too, and if you were to look at a truck from just eight years ago, you’d be shocked by its fuel efficiency. Having a new, tidy fleet is popular with our drivers too,” says Cleece. Following the deal for the new DAFs, Asset Alliance Group was able to demonstrate its responsiveness after another of Huntapac’s vehicle suppliers went into administration. Not only was it able to immediately supply rental vehicles to keep the wheels of the farming business moving, but it also provided compliance support for the affected trucks. “Given that they are our newest vehicle supplier, they are also the one that has helped us out the most,” adds Cleece. Richard Worthington, Business Development Manager for the Northern Region at Asset Alliance Group worked with Cleece and Colin Postlethwaite, Cost Control and Saving Manager at Huntapac, on the deal and subsequent support. Huntapac grows roughly 3,800 acres of root crops a year, including carrots, parsnips and chantenay, across the UK. Its fleet of 65 trucks and 130 trailers – many of which are dualtemperature reefers – move its own produce but sub-contract too. Truck and Track Winter 2025/26 www.truckandtrack.com 14 BUSINESS NEWS Volvo Trucks makes winning return to David Bratt & Sons with two new FH Aeros Cheadle Hulme-based haulier David Bratt & Sons has added the first Volvo trucks to its fleet for more than 20 years – with the arrival of two new Volvo FH Aero 6x2 tractor units. The decision was made following a successful trial with a demonstrator from local dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials, which highlighted the FH Aeros’ supreme fuel performance and working environment. Stephen Bratt, Joint Managing Director at David Bratt & Sons said: “Although we have predominantly run other manufacturers in recent years, whenever the time comes for a fleet refresh or expansion, we always make sure we do our due diligence on what products are out there in the market. “Needless to say, we were suitably impressed with the performance of the Aero demonstrator which highlighted the exceptional driver comfort and fuel efficiency of the latest Volvo trucks.” Supplied by Paul McNicholas, Customer Solutions Manager at Thomas Hardie Commercials, the two new Aeros are powered by Euro VI-compliant D13TC Step E engines which utilise turbo compounding to produce up to 460 hp and a peak torque of 2,600 Nm. By opting for Volvo’s turbo-compound technology, David Bratt & Sons’ drivers can maintain lower revs and a higher gear for a longer time to deliver a more fuel-efficient journey. The engines are paired with a 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox and I-See predictive cruise control to maximise sustainability benefits. The FH Aeros’ fuel economy potential is extended through their sleek, aerodynamic design, with the cab 24 centimetres longer than that of the standard Volvo FH. The specification also includes an array of new technologies that help to reduce energy consumption and emissions reductions by up to five per cent.
