Truck and Track Winter 2024

Truck and Track Winter 2024/25 www.truckandtrack.com 56 SAFETY & SECURITY At the time of going to press, we are unable to establish the success of the implementation of Transport for London’s Progressive Safe System (PSS) although we have learnt that the take up has been high and early signs suggest that it will achieve the expected improvement in overall road safety. According to the TFL, it is estimated that over 150,000 vehicles are now compliant. Many companies took advantage of the grace period sanctioned by TFL to enable operators who needed more time to install the new safety measures required as part of the Progressive Safe System. The grace period was open for applications inclusive up to 27 October 2024 and successful applicants have until 4th May 2025 to install the Progressive Safe System and obtain an HGV safety permit. The PSS initiative is seen by many as a significant successor to the Direct Vision standard which was introduced in 2019 and resulted in a 50% reduction in fatal collisions involving HGVs where vision was a contributory factor. It is expected that the main benefits of PSS will come from reduced road fatalities and serious injuries, plus increased levels of walking and cycling as a result of people feeling safer on the roads. As the UK’s leading supplier of vehicle CCTV systems, Vision UK has embraced the new London standard which includes the Moving Off Information System (MOIS). Providing increased safety for drivers and pedestrians, MOIS enables drivers to detect pedestrians and cyclists directly in front of vehicles. Crucially, Vision UK has developed its intelligent pedestrian detection camera which is so effective that it eliminates the need for side sensor kits on HGVs. Utilising its extensive experience and expertise, the company continues to introduce new safety products which have been securely tested to ensure compliance with all necessary requirements. Typical of these advances is the Vision UK Vulnerable Road User Detection (VRUD) system which embraces 360° recording technology to conform to the TfL, FORS and CLOCS Progressive Safe System requirements. This system features an extreme duty 7″ Monitor and HD Cameras that provide the highest levels of durability with best possible image quality. This innovative DVR is enabled with 360° Vulnerable Road User Detection capability to meet the “Moving Off Information System” and Blind Spot Detection requirements of the Progressive Safe System. The DVR is supplied with a 1 TByte SSD which typically provides over 200 hours of video recording. Vision UK - at the vanguard of PSS Plus a new website
