Truck and Track Winter 2023 www.truckandtrack.com 46 PALLET NETWORKS Cartwright Brothers has taken delivery of three new doubledeck trailers as it looks to reduce its environmental impact by expanding its pallet network services. From its site in Lincolnshire, Cartwright Brothers provides a leading distribution service to customers across eastern England. With over 200,000 sq ft of warehousing space, the business has the capacity and expertise to meet a wide range of logistics requirements. The latest fleet additions will be the first of many over the coming months and years as the business looks to expand its pallet network operation in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint. Pallet networks segregate the stages of the entire door-todoor delivery process by consolidating consignments together into shorter journeys. The haulier has been a member of the Pall-Ex network for over 20 years, more recently joining its sister network, Fortec Distribution. Explaining the decision behind the latest investment, Jamie Cartwright, Director at Cartwright Brothers, commented: “With customers becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their freight, there is no better way to improve our carbon footprint than cutting down on the long-haul aspect of general haulage and consolidating consignments together into shorter journeys. “We identified that increasing our use of the Pall-Ex and Fortec networks and reducing the amount of long-distance general haulage jobs we do, where deliveries can be 50 to 100 miles apart, is the best opportunity for us to become more sustainable.” The new trailers will each have the capacity to carry up to 52 pallets, meaning the business will be able to input over 150 additional pallets per night into the Pall-Ex and Fortec networks. Pallet networks have long been hailed as a more cost-effective and sustainable way to send smaller consignments and single pallets, and it is estimated that pallet networks take an average of 800 vehicles off UK roads each day. By consolidating freight, focusing on efficient route planning and maximising trailer utilisation, Cartwright Brothers strives to make its business more sustainable and environmentally friendly while also helping to reduce its customers’ carbon footprints. Jamie added: “We have identified the growth of our pallet network partnerships as a pivotal part of our business’ future, in both the short and long term. Expanding our pallet network operation will ensure the continued success of the business as we enter our 80th year in operation since our founding in 1944.” Cartwright Brothers expands fleet with three new trailers Pall-Ex Group, a leading pallet distribution network, is proud to announce the launch of the Pall-Ex Group Charitable Foundation, a dedicated platform to support charitable initiatives and extend its commitment to making a positive impact in local communities. The foundation will be overseen by the Pall-Ex Group Board of Directors and selected members of the pallet network, who will serve as trustees, ensuring that the organisation’s charitable endeavours remain transparent, accountable, and aligned with the company’s values. One of the foundation’s primary initiatives is the continuation of the penny-a-pallet scheme, which was initiated during the network’s first year of operation. This program sees one penny from every pallet processed through their hubs donated to charitable causes, which has seen the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, Combat Stress, receive in excess of £40,000 in donations from the Group in recent years. Going forward, all funds generated by this scheme will be directed to the Pall-Ex Group Charitable Foundation to be distributed to Combat Stress and other charity partners. As part of its commitment to supporting charitable causes that matter most to its employees and members, the foundation offers a unique platform where staff and network members can request donations for causes close to their hearts. Requests for charitable donations are systematically reviewed by the Charitable Foundations trustees on a monthly basis. By involving its employees and members in the decision-making process, they aim to create a more inclusive and dynamic approach to charitable giving. From supporting local charities to sponsoring sports teams and reaching out to those in need, the foundation provides the structure and resources necessary to make a meaningful difference in the world. Since the foundation was launched at the start of August, Pall-Ex Group has offered its support to a number of local and national initiatives, including a £1,000 donation to the British Heart Foundation, and contributing over £1,300 to a staff members’ fundraiser which saw them ‘brave the shave’ for GEMS Charity in Leicester Royal Infirmary. Kevin Buchanan, CEO of Pall-Ex Group, commented, “The Pall-Ex Group Charitable Foundation is an exciting new chapter in our journey to make a positive impact in the communities we serve. By consolidating our charitable efforts under this dedicated umbrella, we are better equipped to respond to the diverse needs of our employees, members, and the wider community. Our commitment to social responsibility is now more structured, transparent, and efficient, ensuring that the funds we allocate go to excellent causes across the country.” The foundation marks a significant milestone in Pall-Ex Group’s ongoing efforts to give back and fulfil its corporate social responsibilities.
