Based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Wordsworth Excavations provides nationwide support to some of the UK’s best-known construction contractors. Its specialist services include machine-led demolition and site clearance, as well as engineered earthworks projects. This includes removal of top soil and other materials from site, as well as bringing in significant amounts of aggregate. The company operates 45 tippers: mainly eight-wheeler rigids plus some articulated vehicles and two all-electric trucks. The fleet also includes sweepers and tankers. Wordsworth wanted to move this operation from a paper-based job management system to a TMS. “We are engaged in a lot of bulk haulage, exporting soil from site and importing aggregates,” said Jason Thorp, compliance manager at Wordsworth Excavations. “We had always relied on a paper ticket system but that has several flaws and is not ideal for a diverse and busy fleet like ours. “We faced issues such as being unable to read a driver’s handwriting, or tickets getting lost. It was also hard to improve on time management because we had no visibility of data. We
