Truck and Track Summer 2024 www.truckandtrack.com 60 DANGEROUS GOODS care must be taken to ensure the packaging, as well as quantity of units, is compliant [see previous article on this issue]. ■ Make sure the pallet is fit for purpose (it will be handled several times) ■ Load the pallet evenly (i.e. not one side heavy) ■ Do not allow the goods to overhang the pallet ■ Don’t load more than specified weight requirements for handling ■ Make sure the goods are secure ■ Ensure that you accurately declare the weight and label correctly ■ Check for leaks before dispatch ■ Any technical or chemical query – contact your principal/ supervisor The collecting driver needs to be vigilant to ensure that the pallet is presented safely and with correct documentation within the constraints of ADR, and never to collect any pallet that does not appear safe. There is guidance from The Association of Pallet Networks available from the downloads section of www.theapn.co.uk, or from your DGSA and other training providers. Remember, professionally presented/loaded pallets will help prevent/ reduce incidents occurring in the supply chain. Also remember that, with the carriage of Dangerous Goods, there can be serious consequences if pallets/parcels are not presented in a compliant manner. It is also critical that the Consignor selects a competent/ compliant Carrier/Logistics Company which understands the Supply Chain Environment around the carriage of Dangerous Goods. Otherwise, there could be problems, some of which could become very serious. This article is provided in good faith but not exhaustive as it details only the most common problems.
