Truck and Track Spring 2025

Truck and Track Spring 2025 www.truckandtrack.com 68 DANGEROUS GOODS I had to work out a way of safely removing it, some of it kept reigniting due to water being present. We invoked the emergency exemptions under Chapter 1.1 of ADR but, because so many of the drums were in poor condition, it required over 50 over-drums to make it safe enough to transport! Once removed, we then had to repackage it in a form that was safe and complaint for ADR as well as acceptable to the waste disposal point - in this case incineration. It proved tricky and it took a long time to (literally) sort it! Coincidentally enough, some of the changes to ADR 2025 for packing of waste (that you highlighted in the last issue of Truck and Track), would have helped here. Truck and Track: What are the commonest queries that you and your team of DGSA’s at Adler and Allan face from the road haulage sector when it comes to the carriage of dangerous goods? B Atkinson: Whether loads can be carried by drivers who do not hold an ADR licence, using limited quantity, the “small load” limits of 1.1.3.6 or using Special Provisions. We peer review the answers within the team and mostly we agree on the answers. Sometimes you have to try to interpret what the wording of the legislation is trying to achieve. Truck and Track: There are serious concerns regarding the so-called ‘forever chemicals - aka Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Could you give our readers a little insight into the issues surrounding these chemicals. B Atkinson: Yes these are compounds which are getting more attention now because there is increasing evidence that not only are they resistant to breakdown (some people call them “forever chemicals”), but they accumulate in the body and are linked to a number of health conditions, including cancers. They are used widely in water-proofing compounds, cosmetics, non-stick cooking utensils and particularly in firefighting foam. For those who want to know more about the issue, I wrote a paper on emerging pollutants that can be downloaded from the Adler and Allan website > https://www.adlerandallan.co.uk/knowledge/white-paper/ comprehensive-exploration-business-relevant-pollutants Truck and Track: Thank you for your time and insight.
