Truck and Track Spring 2025

www.truckandtrack.com Spring 2025 Truck and Track 67 DANGEROUS GOODS who was preparing to set-up a collaborative supply chain (in partnership with the late Jim Scanlan for the carriage of Palletised Dangerous Goods - Hazchem Network in Rugby). Many people will remember the tale of the sulphuric acid spill which resulted in the death of a member of the public and which led to the development of the Hazchem marking system, Emergency Action Codes and NCEC. I worked extensively with EACs and later represented the Hazmat Commission of CTIF of European firefighters to try to get EACs also adopted in mainland Europe, as the firefighters preferred EACs to HINs. Sadly the national regulators were not receptive to the views of their responders. Truck and Track: Can you let our readers know what your role at Adler and Allan entails? B Atkinson: It is very full and varied! I manage a superb team of Incident Advisors, providing 24-7 chemical advice worldwide, as well as DGSA services and help with legislation (post Brexit). I also support the Adler and Allan group in chemical spill response, providing advice and support to the hazmat responders in carrying out both emergency and planned works. Latterly, I have also been evaluating the threat of emerging pollutants like PFAS and run-off from lithium-ion battery fires. Truck and Track: Does the recent (majority stake) acquisition of Adler and Allan by Goldman Sachs reaffirm commitment of the organisation’s support of the dangerous goods transportation sector? B Atkinson: The acquisition occurred only recently but it is testimony to the healthy state of the Adler and Allan business that Goldman Sachs was willing to invest in the company and believes in what it does. Truck and Track: Can you tell us how Adler and Allan’s OHES Division supports the UK road haulage sector? B Atkinson: Adler and Allan has grown enormously in the past few years so it is hard to keep up with the breadth of services provided! But to give a flavour, our DGSA team is well-used by some of the palletised goods companies, to check ont the legality of shipments. A lot of specialist advice numbers on tankers connect to my team. I’ve already mentioned spill response. Plus, there is the plethora of engineering solutions, such as tank testing, line pigging etc. It is fair to say, if you think of a service that applies to the sector, part of Adler and Allan is likely to provide it! Truck and Track: Without breaching confidentially protocols could you tell us in general terms some background to the ‘more interesting’ road haulage incidents involving dangerous goods (under ADR) that you have been involved in resolving. B Atkinson: Thankfully there are very few serious road haulage incidents involving dangerous goods, although we do still regularly have tankers carrying fuel that overturn in bad weather or go into ditches. Mentioning ADR, one particularly memorable incident was in 2019 when a large amount of sodium metal being stored in a leaking domestic garage in Birmingham caught fire after heavy rain. The responding fire crews were very lucky not to get hurt, no one expects to find nearly 2 tonnes of sodium in a domestic garage!
