THE COUPLING HAS BECOME A SYSTEM THE COUPLING HELPS THE DRIVER New electrical architecture builds a system of functions and communication around the coupling. Information is passed on to the system’s ‘liaison centre’, Base Cab Module (BCM), via CAN bus. This liaison centre, in turn, sends all necessary information to the driver. As an extension, information can also be sent directly to the cloud as input to other systems, such as fleet management systems. Sensor technology enables entirely new features that make life easier for the driver, improve safety, reduce workshop visits – and save time. Coupling Sensor Module (CSM) detects and displays coupling mode with an LED light (red/green) that is clearly visible even in the dark. In combinations with several trailers that do not have a CAN bus, the light signal can be routed via optical fibre to show the coupling mode on the vehicle side. Digital technology also makes it possible to integrate the coupling into the truck’s instrument cluster, and to directly connect new functions to the CAN bus without separate cabling (plug-and-play). A radar sensor (Drawbar Sensor Module, DSM) together with reflectors on the drawbar enables measurement of distance and drawbar angle. This enables various Drive Assist functions such as jackknife warning and connection guidance.
