Truck and Track Autumn 2024 www.truckandtrack.com 52 SAFETY & SECURITY “As we count down to the implementation of Transport for London’s introduction of the Progressive Safe System, we are seeing heightened interest from a growing number of individuals and fleet operators seeking clarification about timings, penalties and permits.” says Danny Warren, Vision UK’s Head of Sales and Customer Relations. The implementation of Transport for London’s Progressive Safe System (PSS) is expected to improve further road safety. According to the TfL, it is estimated that the new PSS will embrace approximately 165,000 vehicles which is 90% of the existing fleet. This initiative is seen by many as a significant successor to the Direct Vision standard which was introduced in 2019 and resulted in a 50% reduction in fatal collisions involving HGVs where vision was a contributory factor. It is expected that the main benefits of PSS will come from reduced road fatalities and serious injuries, plus increased levels of walking and cycling as a result of people feeling safer on the roads. As the UK’s leading supplier of vehicle CCTV systems, Vision UK is committed to embracing the new London standard which includes the Moving Off Information System (MOIS). Providing increased safety for drivers and pedestrians, MOIS enables drivers to detect pedestrians/cyclists directly in front of vehicles. Crucially, Vision UK has developed its intelligent pedestrian detection camera which is so effective that it eliminates the need for side sensor kits on HGVs. Utilising its extensive experience and expertise, the company continues to introduce new safety products which have been securely tested to ensure compliance with all necessary requirements. Typical of these advances is the Vision UK Vulnerable Road User Detection (VRUD) system which embraces 360° recording technology to conform to the TfL, FORS and CLOCS Progressive Safe System requirements. This system features an extreme duty 7″ Monitor and HD Cameras that provide the highest levels of durability with best possible image quality. This innovative DVR is enabled with 360° Vulnerable Road User Detection capability to meet the “Moving Off Information System” and Blind Spot Detection requirements of the Progressive Safe System. The DVR is supplied with a 1 TByte SSD which typically provides over 200 hours of video recording. MOIS (Moving Off Information System) To meet the MOIS requirement, Vision UK recommends that vehicles are fitted with the company’s MOIS front camera and VRUD recognition provided by the DVR. This not only detects pedestrians within the detection zone but also warns the driver of VRUs who are in the path of the vehicle when it pulls off. BSIS (Blind Spot Information System) To comply with the stringent BSIS requirements, Vision UK recommends using the company’s dedicated VRUD camera in conjunction with the DVR VRUD. This camera is faster responding and has a longer detecting distance than the DVR which is necessary to ensure the system reliably meets the BSIS Technical Requirements.
