www.truckandtrack.com Autumn 2022 Truck and Track 65 DANGEROUS GOODS The four of us debated the concept of a specialist network for Dangerous Goods. We were further supported by fellow Pallex Members at that time, Bill Bowker of WH Bowker Ltd and Peter Masters of Miniclipper Ltd among others from Pallex’s membership. Both Bill and Peter needed the ability to use the pallet network model to move their ADR freight. At that time, the only way you could do so, was by dedicated transport - which brought additional cost, and issues regarding next day freight and service levels. Later, it would take Jim Scanlan of TPN, Gerald Coates of H W Coates, Ken Hackling and Palletline, among others, who supported us at Hazchem Network that enabled the UK’s only palletised network for ADR / IMDG to develop from an “idea”, into “reality”. In transforming Hazchem Network Ltd into a tangible reality, particular mention must also be made of the steerage from Paul Sanders, Chair of The Association of Pallet Networks [APN]; as well as support from the other ambient (non-hazardous) pallet networks. It was a hard road, though I am indebted to Hilary who told me that she believed I could do it, when others considered that I could not do it, and was (I quote) “…mental in thinking I could……” She confided in me - “Trucking is a sector dominated by white males. I’m in the minority - a woman - but I did it. I set up Pallex when everyone told me I’d never be able to succeed. Now it’s my turn to tell you that you’re stronger than you think. Forget that you are also from a minority - because I believe in you, and your idea.” I will never forget that day, nor Hilary’s cackling laughter during the meeting as we debated, discussed, drew plans on the backs of our cigarette packets, A4 Pads and A3 sheets for hub layouts “Thank you.” I said folding my artwork on hub design under my arm, and she raised her giant mug of coffee, saying “You got this Ali,” as there was a rapping on the door. Incidentally, Adrian and Hilary even offered David and I the option of using their old Gotham hub as an operating centre - as they were shortly relocating to the new bespoke facility that Pallex currently operate from. Later, Hilary told me how she regretted not funding Hazchem Network at the time, but was philosophical, because she was heavily involved in organising the European Pallex Operations, as well as the construction of the bespoke hub, in Ellistown, Leicestershire; the location Pallex currently operates from. I will forever be in debt to Hilary Devey for believing in me and, for that, I credit her for being the inspiration that transformed a mild-mannered Industrial Chemist into an Entrepreneur. She may have passed on, but the blue sky thinking she brought to the UK logistics sector and advice for entrepreneurs will never be forgotten because she took from her surroundings what was needed... and made of it…. something more. Our thoughts are for her family. From the BBC vis-à-vis Hilary Devey > https://lnkd.in/eF_hB8X7 If you need inspiration – “Never one to give up, I have successfully overcome every hurdle obstructing my way and am living proof that if you really set your mind to do something, you can achieve amazing results.” Hilary Devey CBE More information > https://www.hilarydevey.com If you wish to make a donation to one of the charities that she championed More information > https://www.hilarydevey.com/charity-support/ Remember business is not all about profit, it’s also about being a decent, helpful person who becomes a role model supporting the aspirations of younger people. We all need to build confidence in our youth, because it will be the young who will be tasked with managing our logistics future.
